Paris for a 13 year old daughter
 

Greetings! I may go to Paris in the summer of 2005 with my wife and 13
year old daughter from USA. We shall visit both UK and Paris. We
probably will stay in Paris for 5 days excluding travel time. What
are the places a thirteen year old girl will be interested? A list
suggested places in Paris will be highly appreciated. With thanks.

Thirteen-year-olds vary greatly. It would be a good idea to tell us
what sort of thing she likes at home.

been there done that -- what I did is buy a good illustrated guidebook
of Paris and ask my daughter to plan some of our time

places my daughter found interesting: Park Butte Chamont, D'Orsay,
French pastries, Cluny particularly the unicorn tapestries, the canal
boat trip, Notre Dame and particularly the climb up the tower where the
gargoyles are and the chance to sit right under the giant bell, french
restaurants for multi course meals involving snails and chocolate
mousse, shopping for a dress in Montmarte, ice cream at Bertillion on
the Isle.

At night you might want to try the area around the Bastille Opera House.
It is one of the places young people go at night (though most are a bit
older than 13). Very lively, with lots of restaurants and street life.
Rue Oberkampf, in the 11th, is also fun.

I agree with all of Jenn, though I certainly have not seen all of her
recommendations. We've taken our daughter to Paris, and all around
Europe since she was about 2. She is now 16.

In museums I would challenge my daughter to find her favorite painting.
It's a goodie hunt for her and an education for me.

- Musée Grévin (like Mme Tussaud's)
- The Palais de la Découverte (Science museum) has things for children but
probably not in English ; same for the Cité des Sciences in La Villette,
where there is a 3d cinema
- Grande Arche de la Défense / Eiffel Tower
- Bateaux-mouches (boats on the Seine)
- Beaubourg (Georges Pompidou museum), from outside
- Catacombs (unless she is too sensitive)
- Some zoo ? Circus ? Flea market ? Attraction parks ?

In the same order, the "Palais de la découverte" might be
interesting. Some kind of Science Museum, probably more old-fashioned
than "Cité des sciences". However, I'm not completely sure that the
explanations are written in english...

About ten to twenty years older, yes.

The Latin Quarter is better. The parts of town you describe are among
the last I'd bring anyone.

A lot more hands-on exhibits, though, and they tend to be more in
working order than those at La Villette.

In addition to what has been suggested, perhaps the sewers (which I
actually enjoyed, but the tours aren't geared to young teenagers) and the
"funiculaire de Montmartre" (about which I know nothing except that it
exists).

When was the last time you visited the rue Oberkampf? We have a friend who
has an apartment just off that street, so we go to visit her often. The
neighborhood is very lively, lots of nice restaurants, and a young,
"branché" crowd. I think it's a great area. Do you think it's dangerous or
something?
