Paradise place to live in Europe?

I was wondering what people in here consider to be the perfect place to
live in Europe?
I'm thinking here of aspects such as decent infrastructure, quiet, non
touristy area, with a climate that has no real extremes (say averaging max
temps of mid 20s or so); and where a nice villa is still buyable.
It can be mainland or an island.
I note that on the concierge website, the thousands of travellers polled in
their latest survey concluded:
2003 TOP 10 EUROPEAN ISLANDS
01 - Capri
02 - Madeira
03 - Mykonos & the Cyclades
04 - Sicily
05 - Sardinia
06 - Crete
07 - Majorca & Minorca
08 - Rhodes & the Dodecanese
09 - Corfu & the Ionians
10 - Channel Islands

We've been all through this before.
Spain seemed to score on cost of living, cost of property, EU membership
(for health services, etc.), ease of returning to UK spasmodically (if that
matters to you).
Location seemed to be Andulasia (but probably slightly inland and higher
elevation to avoid extreme heat).

I've looked at spanish properties (online and from brochures) and they are
waaaay overpriced imho
Mallorca and Menorca are interesting, but again the prices are stupid.
Andulucia looked interesting - I saw the tail end of that tv show a few
weeks back, where a British couple built a lovely high mountain villa for
300 thousand pounds all in (ie building and site costs all included).
I don't know much about Andulucia tho. I;d love to see the above tv show
in full.
Does anyone know of any good online real estate agencies for that area?

You can still buy, say, a 2-bed detached villa or house with pool (not on a
new urbanisation) for around £50,000 if you look around.

Real estate prices are determined by supply and demand. if a lot
of people wantto buy in an area of limited availability prices go
up.

What area? Andalucia is a pretty big place. For instance,
everyone's heard about the absurd real estate prices in
California, but I expect you can find some pretty reasonable
places in Brawley or Needles.

Turkey, The Turkish Coast in particular, is as close as I have come to
finding a bargain paradise in Europe, it you consider Turkey to be a
part of Europe. The cost is quite cheap if you are spending dollars or
euros. There are beautiful beach towns (Kas, Cesme) and some islands,
mostly in the Sea of Marmara, 1-3 hours by ferry from Istanbul. Selcuk,
near Efes, is nice too and beaches begin a few miles away.

Oh certainly. Turkish prices are VERY low. But to move there is problematic.
However, assuming that Turkey will be coming into the EU, when property
prices should shoot up, it has to be the best overseas property *investment*
choice by far currently.

why ignoring Canary Islands?
IMO the cheapest among the above.
perhaps not anymore :-(

I certainly felt welcome there, and I was an American visiting a few
months after 9/11. Lots of westerners live in Turkey.

Patrick, thanks for the great tip!
I had a google there now and found some great prices in Turkey.
eg http://www.sun-invest.com/e/dream-hill.html
My worry is the heat and humidity.....was it very hot?
Any nice breezes at all?

Yes, they sound like the paradise places to go on holiday in the opinion of
the common traveller.
I think Spain is out, because of its draconian property laws that allow
developers to seize land, and many southern European countries still have
problems with water supply in some areas (that's one major issue against
Gibraltar).
I think my preferences would be towards the Benelux countries or, "when I
win the lottery" Andorra sounds quite nice.
