In his testimony to Hutton he said he knew the statement was "probably"
not true at the time of airing... only calling this guy a 'liar', which
the PM's office has done, is being generous... a man is dead.

No doubt they make technical errors on occasion, but I think
"much of their reporting is wrong" is an overstatement.

Unless one knows the technical or scientific background one can't
judge.

I have seen some of the technical handouts. There's no excuse for not
being able to copy simple facts, even if such things aren't very
exciting.

It's a trivial exercise to search for the word "probably" in the
transcripts. Please quote exactly what you are referring to from his
testimony.

    > only calling this guy a 'liar', which
    > the PM's office has done, is being generous... a man is dead.

Indeed. The PM is seen on television saying that he did not authorise
the release of Kelly's name to the press, and the inquiry shows clearly
that he did, in fact, authorise the name. There was no scope in the
inquiry to cross-examine the PM on this. Yes, indeed, a man is dead, and
he was completely shafted by the MoD and the rest of the government.
Gilligan is not blameless in this- but the government is exponentially
more culpable in their shabby treatment of Kelly. This was not a point
lost on the UK public.

but the BBC used to have much higher reporting standards than
elsewhere.

you could see the guilt on Blairs face when he was on TV soon
after being told Kelly was dead.

Unfortunately, when it comes to Blair, that's about the _only_ chance we
ever have to see it.

Was recently in the audience for BBC Radio 4's "Any Questions" when it
came to a Bristol suburb. Andrew Gilligan was on the panel, and "New"
Labour was represented by Trade and Industry Minister Jacqui Smith.
Predictably enough, questions on Iraq were raised - and Gilligan ran
rings around Jacqui Smith. If body language was anything to go by,
Gilligan was relaxed and confident, Jacqui Smith squirmed in her seat.
She also pronounced "the" and"a" as "thee" and "ay" which made her
sound false. There was no doubt who the audience believed.

Ownsership of broadcast media is a moot point - in the same week,
massive redundancies were announced at the BBC. Softening it up for
privatisation, perhaps? Hope it doesn't end up in the grubby paws of
Global Conglomerates Inc.

Oh, I heard that programme, and still remember it. (Thought about it in
this thread in fact!)

Even just listening to it, this was quite clear.

The country went to war and was partly responsible for killing tens of
thousands of people, on the basis of flawed intelligence, and worse, the
selective use of intelligence to make a flimsy case for it. This puts in
perspective the governments outrage at a few sloppy comments made by a
reporter at 6.07 am one weekday morning.

There is a transcript of the show at-

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/news/any...transcript.pdf

but it doesn't give the sense of the audience reaction etc.-

Nowhere and neither did Evelyn imply you did. She was simply making a
