Oslo--Stavanger
What are connections like between Oslo and Stavanger? I'm heading to
Stavanger for a conference late this spring. I'll be departing from the east coast of the USA. I can book a flight into Stavanger, but I was wondering what the rail connection was like from Oslo. Preliminary Googles didn't give me a quick answer so I'd thought I'd post to this group. Thanks! Wes |

My hotel in the central square of Stavanger was close to a terminal station. We were however on a coach tour, did the way back on a ferry on the Lysefjord (I did not visit the Prekestol, just saw it from below), then up into the mountains, with a stopover on some lake in the Telemark region (including a piece of navigation on the Telemark canal). -- ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [email protected] is a newsreading account used by more persons to avoid unwanted spam. As the guy discovered: three times a day, 8 hours city to city plus the extra time from the airport. And Norwegian fares are not cheap. It's probably less cost to add on an airfare. And the airline will rebook you if the flight's late, the train might not (if there is another train that day) tim |

Indeed, I'm rather delighted to see they've opened up a budget route (albeit only on Thursdays and Sundays) from Manchester to Bergen. -- David Horne- http://www.davidhorne.net usenet (at) davidhorne (dot) co (dot) uk http://homepage.mac.com/davidhornecomposer http://soundjunction.org |

David, I've a question for you. I noticed that Ryan fly to Haugesund, half way between Bergen and Stavanger. But boths towns are 100km or more away and both need a ferry ride as well. Do people really fly to this airport for Bergen/ Stavanger, it seems a pretty difficult connection if they do, but it's a rather small catchment if they don't. I can't find an airport website to see if there's a connecting bus thanks tim |

That still seems to be the case- have a look at: http://www.kystbussen.no/english/ryanair.aspx Personally, if I was going to Bergen from a London airport, I'd probably just try and get a direct flight. Once you add on the bus fare and times, you'd need to get the really low ryanair flights to make a difference. At the time, I was thinking of going from Manchester by surface to Stansted, then onwards... I decided it was just silly! My brother lives half way up a hill outside Bergen, and always insists on picking us up at the airport. I'm determined to do it by public transport one day, which would require a 15-20 minute walk to his house from a bus stop which has an infrequent but predictable service. He and the rest of the family always look at me as though I were nuts when I suggest it! :) -- David Horne- http://www.davidhorne.net usenet (at) davidhorne (dot) co (dot) uk http://homepage.mac.com/davidhornecomposer http://soundjunction.org |

I was expecting it to be one of those that takes 30 cars an hour and was thinking that if 100 families all left the airport at the same time the last ones would wait 3 hours for a ferry, but it's not it's a 140 car ferry running twice an hour. tim |

Re: Oslo--Stavanger
Thanks everyone for the info. It looks like it will be much simplier
to just fly into Stavanger than it is to try anything involving changes in travel mode and alternative airports. Wes |
