Default Opinions on Vienna

Hi all,

This summer I am going to Germany for nine days, and I had thought about
splitting half of the time between Munich and Vienna. I'd love to hear some
opinions about Vienna. Is it a city worth visiting (is salzburg nicer)..
Positive/ negative experiences of people in this group.. Anything you could
provide me with would be greatly appreciated..

Sincerely, Anthony

There is no question, in my opinion, having spent months, for over
twenty years (had an apartment there) in Vienna and going frequently to
Salzburg:
There is no comparison:

Salzburg is interesting, overtouristed, overMozarted, and can be well
seen in one day.

Vienna offers anything you want, and is a superior cosmopolitan capital
city. It has, probably more museums than any other city in the world (I
am sure some will differ with me); excellent local transportation; fine
parks; excellent and varied food; and is very vibrant.

It is also close to Budapest, which is worth a day.

I would split half each to M and V, and on your limited time skip S.

Of course, unless you are careful, Vienna is one of the expensive cities
in Europe; even McDonald's is higher than most cities.

We enjoyed Vienna much more than Salzburg. Vienna seemed to be a working city
like Paris or London that relies on part on tourism of course but ha many other
business too. There are probably more locals in the shops, restaurants, etc.
Salzburg appears to earn a much higher percentage of it's income from tourism,
hence a higher percentage of tourists.

Yes Vienna is far better than Salzburg, which is in my opinion overrated
and over touristed. In my opinion, Vienna has a more relaxed,
cosmopolitan atmosphere than Munich, although Munich is certainly
interesting.

I would cut the Vienna visit by a day, and hit Salzburg, just to
satisfy yourself that what the good doctor
said regarding Salzburg is exactly right - and maybe shorten Munich by
a day as well, and spend it on Budapest

Can't speak for Salzburg, because I've not yet been there (the summer
music festival is very expensive and, like Bayreuth, requires
reservations a couple of years in advance - or so I've been told).
However, IMO Vienna at ANY time is worth visiting! (Especially if
you're into classical music.) I fell in love with the city the first
time I met it, and it really is "My City of Dreams" - if I could figure
out a way to live there on my meager retirment income, I'd emigrate
tomorrow, even though my command of the language is "minimal
phrase-book", at best. Perhaps it's because many of the great composers
(and most of my favorite ones) lived and worked there for at least part
of their lives, but for me it has a certain ambiance I've yet to find
elsewhere.

I don't doubt what you say, but did you actually EAT at McDonalds in
Vienna, with so many better choices available? I've not been there for
a couple of years (hope to spend Christmas and New Years there, this
year) but I had the impression the cost of living was about the same as
that in L.A. (meaning relatively expensive, but not nearly so expensive
as New York City).

No, but for some gala concerts it is not difficult to find places in
Salzburg festival; it is nothing like Bayreuth. The problem is that
ticket are very expensive and in my opinion not really worth, as you can
find the same performers and same musical quality at half the price in
any major opera or concert house in the continent.

Evelyn:

You know me better than to have EVER eaten at McD. I was basing it on
this [very interesting] McDonald index the "Economist" has published for
several years.[Are you acquainted with this index?] I have seen their
prices, having had an apartment there for 25 years; and, probably beside
Tokyo, it is the highest.

Regarding hotels/pensions: Of course, you know, there are ranges in
facilities. Level for level, I would put NY, London, Paris, and Vienna
very similarly . . .

. . But, for sure, the availability of pensions is more in Vienna,
than those others; meaning one could, with some effort, live more
reasonably in V.

Didn't know you were interested, or I would have tried to sell you my
apartment prior to doing so.

I may be headed there for the first time myself, in the next year. Question:
Is the language spoken there fairly standard German? Or is it a really strong
dialect like, say, Switzdeutsche?

Ha, it's "Wienerisch" - it IS a strong accent, but nowhere as strong as
Schwytzerdütsch to my ears. If you only understand Hochdeutsch then you'll
have a problem in the bars, but mostly with a bit of imagination you can
cope.

There's a dictionary of Wienerisch at http://www.janko.at/Wienerisch/ if
you read German.

Of course Austrians speak Austrian in local variations but generally they
are able to speak a better German than most Germans do. So if you speak to a
local you should be quite happy.

I think Vienna is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. And
Munich is one of the most festive cities in the world. Both are
incredible. Salzburg is pretty, but very small and can never keep up
with the two big ones mentioned.

Well, I'm not sure what variety my German is - a voice teacher once told
me I sang it with a Viennese accent, but you can't prove it by me. I
had no trouble being understood, and my problems in understanding were
lack of vocabularly and grammar, not problems with the accent. I think
the Viennese pronunciation may be a bit "softer" than in Berlin, and I'm
told some words have slightly different meanings in Austria and in
Germany, but if you speak German, you shouldn't have any real problems.
(Someone once told me it's akin to the differences between English and
American - we usually understand one another quite well, despite
different accents.)
