Last nite it was -2 degrees C. Tonight they are predicting -5C. Sunday night
a full ten degrees below.( That's 14 degrees F!). I don't think I want to be
"lost," or even out much, in those temperatures.
The people who remember the joys of getting lost in Venice are invariably
summer visitors.

Sorry I do not share your opinion.
I love to walk in the street and along the canals when it is really
cold. First of all, you do not have any smells coming from the cold
water, second, the air may be much dryer, hence clearer than in the
summer. Negative temperatures just require that you dress accordingly,
and in the cold, with less people wandering around, the Serenissima is
just a little bit more magic.
But that is of course just my humble opinion :-)

I'll meet you halfway here, Dominique. A quiet canal-side, a still nite,
crisp, cold air, and Venice is lovely. Enchante. As long as you are moving
along, knowing where you are going. But there is cold, jolly cold, bloody
damn cold, and -10 centigrade. I don't want to be lost in the latter.
Tonight it is exactly average for the date: 0 degrees. But it will start to
move up ( in average) in a few days -- going to aim at 1 any day now.

Maybe I am used to it, but I rarely notice smells anywhere. I think the
town's reputation for such is no longer really valid. Some backed-up
toilets -- indoors -- perhaps.

The joys of getting lost anywhere are a lot better in the Summer. I
lived in southern Germany, would hitchhike down to Lausanne regularly
during the summer. It gets cold then.
Over Christmas break, Buddy and I went on a little auto-tramp,
intending to go from Lausanne into Italy, then back to Germany by way of
Austria. Well, we didn't make it. Did you know, that in the passes SE of
Lausanne, headed towards Atosa, the sun goes behind the mountains about 2
pm? Once that happens, it starts to cool off, and it is stone dark and
cold by 4:30? I mean ice forming in the moustache cold?
Ah, but it was a lovely trip, even if we didn't make it to Austria.
Wound up looping west back to Switzerland by train from outside Turino.
Beautiful countryside. I'd love to go back. Maybe in winter, but more
likely in summer :-)
