Northern AVE rail line opens in March

According to TVE teletext yesterday, 15 Feb. 2003 (page 109),
the Secretary of State for Infrastructure, Benigno Blanco, has
announced that AVE service between Madrid and Lerida will
begin in the second week of March 2003.
During this first phase, the trains will run at a maximum speed of
200 km/h. When the extension from Lerida to Barcelona is opened,
in 2004, the maximum speed will be 300 km/h. Initially, AVEs
will be scheduled to take not more than 3 hours between Madrid
and Lerida and cost EUR 54.00. The price for a single ticket by
AVE between Madrid and Barcelona will be EUR 59.00.

El AVE Madrid-Lleida comenzará a fun-
cionar la segunda semana de marzo, se-
gún ha anunciado el secretario de Esta-
do de Infraestructuras, Benigno Blanco.
Después de esta primera fase, en la que
los trenes circularán a una velocidad
máxima de 200 kilómetros por hora, el
Ministerio de Fomento inaugurará en
2004 la prolongación hasta Barcelona,
con trenes que circularán a 300 kilóme-
tros por hora.
El trayecto Madrid-Lleida en el nuevo
AVE se podrá hacer en un tiempo máximo
de tres horas, a un precio de 54 euros.
El viaje entre Madrid y Barcelona cos-
tará 59 euros.

Notwithstanding the authenticity of the news item posted below,
the opening of the first part of the new high-speed rail line between
Madrid and Barcelona will *not* take place in the second week
of March. No firm new date has been announced, but local rail
personnel now expect it to be in April. And the initial service will
probably consist of two trains running daily between Madrid and
Lerida, one non-stop.
My apologies for any inconvenience I may have caused.
