No tsunami after seaquake

Wed 24/01/07 - A seaquake occurred off the Belgian-French coast on
Tuesday evening. The epicentre of the quake was situated 73 kilometres
from the city of Bruges (West Flanders) and 37 kilometres from the
French city of Dunkirk.
(belga)
The quake measured 4 on the Richter scale and could not be felt on
land.

The French geological service registered the quake at 18.32 on Tuesday.

The daily Het Laatste Nieuws reports that four hours after the incident
the Belgian Interior Ministry's crisis unit had not received a single
report of damage.

At no time was there any danger for the Channel Tunnel.
Belgian coast no stranger to tsunamis
Manuel Sintubin, professor of Geology and Tectonics at Leuven
University says that there are records of heavier earthquakes in the
English Channel in 1382, 1449 and 1580.

People of the day also make mention of tsunamis reaching the Belgian
coast.

Experts say that a quake measuring 4 on the Richter scale is not
uncommon in our waters.

The quake did not result in a tsunami. This can only happen when the
quake measures 6 on the Richter scale.

The last time Belgium was hit by an earthquake was in 2002 when the
quake measured 4.9 on the Richter scale.

The epicentre was situated in Eschweiler just over the border in
Germany.

Usually it's eastern Belgium that is affected by earthquakes. A quake
in Lige in 1983 measured 5 on the Richter scale.
