Default Nice: day trips via bus

I have a 3 day break planned for Nice, end of April.
I am planning a day trip to Monaco (via bus -- it only seems to be
15km down the road).
Any other "must see" towns within striking distance of Nice? Cannes
sounds expensive and over-hyped, due to the film festival connections.
Or should I just stay put and explore Nice?

Did you read recent posts here before you asked your question?

A good bus trip you can take, not too far, is up to Mont Boron. No.14 bus
goes right up to the top, with great views, and allows (if you want) very
pleasant walks down to the coast road. There is an old fort to explore up
there too.

You might prefer the train...the roads are fairly convoluted in the Cote
d'Azur and it's further (and longer) than you think.

It is much much easier to go to any of the coastal towns by train. Cheaper
and much faster also. It is only about 25 minutes from Nice to Monte Carlo
by train. A good bus trip from Nice is to St. Paul de Vence. Get the #400
bus from Nice Gare Routiere. Takes about 40 minutes. Another good train
trip from Nice is to go to Beauliew Sur Mer. Takes about 10 minutes. You
can walk around this nice little coast town and then take the 15 minutes
walk along the sea to St.Jean Cap Ferrat. Beautiful area.

While there, visit the Fondation Maeght art gallery. Un-missable.

The bus from Nice stops within 200 meters of the Maeght gallery. I was
there in December. Entry fee is considerable more than most museums and
galleries at 11 euros. You should know that although some impressionist
artists lived and worked around St. Paul de Vence this gallery does not
exibit any of them. The art work here is more abstract and surreal. I
mention this because I expected to find impressionism but enjoyed this
gallery just the same as I visited with an artist who explained things to
me.

Off topic really, but I've got an LP by Duke Ellington which was recorded
there.

Now you have to tell us how it came about that Duke Ellington recorded an LP
there. And when?

I really had a terrific time at St.Paul de Vence. The galleries in the
village have some terrific contemporary paintings for sale. The area seems
to inspire great art work. I expect to be going back there in July and for
sure in October.

You had to ask! OK I;ll go and look up the album. Report later.

OK, Duke Ellington "In the Uncommon Market" (Pablo 2308-247), This recording
is undated, although the Penguin Guide to jazz on CD places it as 1964.

Extract from notes by Norman Grantz

"I filmed the band with Ella Fitzgerald at the Festival at Juan Les Pins.
One afternoon I took Duke, drummer Sam Woodyard and bassist John Lamb to the
Fondation Maegt, which is, without doubt, physically one of the most
beautiful museums in the world. I made a short film featuring the great
Spanish painter Joan Miro, and Duke. I prevailed upon Duke to play two or
three numbers for Miro's benefit, who was an admitted jazz fan, especially
of Duke Ellington. The first number "The Shepherd" pleased Duke so much that
he did a second version, extending it by almost a third. I found the two
takes so charming that I decided to include them both. He also played "Kinda
Dukish".

I pleaded with Ellington tp repeat the Trio set with the same tunes on the
evening concert. He agreed it was a good idea, but typically, never played
them again on the rest of that tour".
