Sorry, couldn't find an American travel NG to post this too, so
thought you good folk might be able to lend a hand ;-)
Heading to America for the first time - New York City for 4 nights
(from Australia) in early September. I'm a bit overwhelmed, as there's
obviosuly so much to try and fit into only 4 days.
We're staying in the Manhatten area. Perhaps you live in NYC, or have
been there before, what would you recommend to do for a couple in
their late 20's?
I'll be looking at having a huge one on a Sat night to celebrate my
B/day. Any recommendations on where to blow the throff off a few?
Appreciate any help.

It is rec.travel.usa-canada. If BlueYonder doesn't have it then I suggest
you ask them to add it to the feed.

"Perhaps you live in NYC, or have been there before, what would you

Could you say something about your interests? New York has so much to
offer (I live here), but it's hard to give specific recommendations
without knowing what you do and don't like.

Try rec.travel.usa-canada
I'm in my very late '20s (several decades late:-).
We did the normal tourist things over three nights and four
days - Empire State, Staten Island Ferry, NY Library, rode
the subways, Times Square, ate in delis, a Broadway Show,
took some cross-town buses to look at the district and the
people, Central park, etc.
As for night-life on your birthday - not the faintest idea.
Cheers, Alan, Australia

Need to know about your interests before recommending specific things to
see and do. Weather should be quite decent in early September, maybe a
bit hot. Certainly go for a stroll in Central Park - heck take the
carriage ride through the Park. Too early for the main concert/opera
seasons, but there are always the museums, from the Metropolitan Museum
of Art, to the Frick, to the Natural History Museum.
Ride the subways for a real taste of NYC. Heh, once when we were
visiting there (we have friends and relatives in Manhattan and the
surrounding area) my sister asked if the subways were safe at 11 pm. I
pointed out that at 11 pm it was not a question of safety, but rather
would you even get a seat on the subway!
Try one of the 'in' restaurants for your birthday. Someplace like
Balthazar's in SoHo. Get you reservations now. Balthazar's makes what
is perhaps the finest sourdough rye bread I have ever tasted, perhaps
even better than the Chamberlain Bakery in Detroit. So far I have
certainly not had any bread in Europe that could compare. And do not
forget the deli's - at Katz's you can have what she had, although
actually I prefer the 2nd Avenue deli.

We booked a Big Apple Greeter for our first morning in NY. A very nice lady
met us at our hotel and took us on a sightseeing tour tailored to our
interests. This service is free!! Recommended.

I wish I had known of this in '03 - but I'll be back next
year. Something I found on the web-page sounds almost
sacrilegious after my previous NY experience:
"And while a Greeter may exceed your expectations, tipping
is not permitted."
Could you give some more feedback on the experience please?

You're constantly asking them to include rec.travel.usa-canada? :)
Somehow, I think not...

We only booked a couple of days prior to going, so had thought maybe we'd
left it to late.
We said our interests included. Secondhand / Charity shops, anything off
the wall, Rocky horror show. But we were open to do anything in any area of
NY-- just so they can try and match you with someone of similar tastes.
There was a message at the hotel from the lady to say she'd meet us next
morning.
The greeters even pay their own transport fares !! She explained how the
travel systems worked, how to purchase tickets etc , we went shopping in
Upper Manhatten, found some great designer clothes in S/H shops. And quirky
little shops
We did insist on paying for lunch ( with great difficulty). as they really
are not supposed to accept anything for this service.
I believe you can specify an area of NY you'd like to visit.
