Hi, I'm a 24 yr-old Scottish gal.
I'm spending Christmas and New Year in Tenerife. Doing the family
thing for Christmas in los Gigantes, but staying in a hotel in los
Cristianos for New Year.
I will be spending NYE with my sister and friend (both 26) in los
Cristianos or Playa de las Americas. I've heard Americas can be very
touristy/brit-filled/ benidorm-like. We're looking for something a bit
more spanishy. Anybody know what the nightlife's like this time of
year in that area? Any recommendations on where to go?
Also, does anybody know any good bars in los Gigantes?

You could head out to small fishing villages along the coast or
go up into the interior. No spanish tourist development is more
than a couple of miles across at most, but of course Tenerife was
fairly quiet before tourism, so dont expect much beyond a little
bar/restaurante.
However, the capital is a busy port and authenticly spanish, but
of course its at the other end of the island and being spanish
isnt about "pubs".

We were staying at a place in the north of Tenerife over New Year some
years back. The Spanish have quite a party on New Year with fireworks
and stuff. There's also a tradition that when the clock strikes
midnight, you have to eat one grape for every chime of the clock. Eating
12 grapes that fast is not easy...

And good info about Teide, Mike. I'm not much of a walker, but would
you say Teide is a must for the views etc?

Yes, if you don't get a permit you can just go to the top of the
teleferico, which is good. The last stretch to the top is a fair
effort, even though not far, because of the altitude, but views
are always better from summit. Even without doing Teide, its
worth going up into the outer crater, maybe to watch the sun set.
