Hi everyone,
My husband and myself are 40+ without kids. What we're looking for is a
place where we can relax and unwind, if possible within the guidelines
detailed below.
Our ideal place would be a seaside resort, staying in a 4 or 5 star hotel,
but:
(1) A hotel with no kids allowed (is there such a thing?) (i.e. I want to
relax by the pool without children screaming and splashing around),
(2) A resort unattractive to teenagers (i.e. no discos, no arcades, no
super-pubs, etc.),
(3) As few as possible drunk twenty-somethings (you know, the kind you'll
find after stag/hen parties) causing disturbances in the streets,
(4) Be able to go out for a pleasant stroll in the evening along the
promenade and sit at one of the cafés there to have a coffee or a drink,
etc.,
(5) With a nice shopping area (meaning also supermarkets and all kind of
shops, not just clothes and souvenirs).
As a reference, last 2 summers we stayed in the "Maspalomas Faro" area in
Gran Canaria, and found it quite enjoyable and close to our expectations.
Actually, very near that place is "Playa del Ingles" which is exacly what we
are NOT looking for.
I will appreciate if you can share your experiences with me in order to help
us find our next summer destination and meet our guidelines.
Thanks very much,

Try North Cyprus. You won't find anything too posh, but the last empty
beaches in the whole Mediterranean and very quiet.
Some years ago I stayed at the Mare Monte Hotel, near Girne (Kyrenia). No
swimming-pool, but a private beach, the disco several 100 m away that you do
not hear anything, and some ten km to town (hotel bus available). Now you
even can fly in non-stop via Larnaka. Anybody should speak at least some
English in North Cyprus.

How about Puerto de la Cruz in the north of Tenerife? I know the
Hotel Tigaiga which is popular with well-heeled (mostly German)
tourists. They do take children although I don't recall seeing many
there, and for sure you won't come across the stag/hen night crowd
there

if you speak decent Arab, know the locals and know what places to avoid, it
might be allright.
You have the UN and lots of local/turkish soldiers in North Cyprus, but they
do not harm anybody. The second language is English, nobody expects you to
speak Turkish.

My experience was that :-
Many people speak English and / or French in Syria,
The locals are very friendly and helpful - they used to say welcome to
my country and actually meant it. Never had that experience in Turkey
without a carpet shop appearing.
Its the same mediterranean that you are talking about, except there are
less tourists.
And more importantly you can buy beer.
