Default Naples or Sorrento?

Which city is better to stay at? My guidebook says that theft is common in
Naples. But Naples might have a better nightlife. Also, I've heard that some
racism exists in southern Italy. Would Naples or Sorrento be better for an
Asian male?

Under the assumptions you make [Naples is more 'fun', but more dangous;
while the assumption is that Sorrento is quieter and safer--which is
probably true], you have to make the choice.

I woud take Naples, anyway, any day; unless you are over 80.

What kind of racism; how can one use this word without being more
specific: against gays, Jews, Tutsis, blacks, Americans, etc. -- the
world is full of those who have the need for prejudice. I qualify for
three of the above, and wouldn't let it affect me.

I think stories of Naples being crime ridden are outdated. Sure, it is a
big city. There is crime. But i don't think Naples is any more dangerous than
most other european cities.

I visited naples last summer, and we havent felt unsafe for a single
moment. If you want to enjoy life in the city, I can only recommend Naples
over Sorrento.

The only drawback is that naples is a very noisy city under high pressure
of the traffic. We were very happy to have a hotel with a quiet terrace on
the top floor that offered an escape to the noisy traffic (
http://www.book-a-hotel-in-naples.co...hot/index.html )

Or you can find an escape at the seaside or in some of the parks.

I can't say anything about racism. I'm a white male and the napolitans
were particularly friendly to my blonde girlfriend. bit to friendly ;-)

When i was there, there were many african guys selling leather belts and
stuff in the streets. We didn't notice overt racism. Once, we noticed the
police urging them to stop their illegal trade. But as far as i could see
that was quite friendly and with respect.

Bye, Arthur.

I'd say go for Sorrento, it's by the sea and it's gorgeous. Naples can be
dangerous, a lot of pick-pocketing and the like, and the city has some dodgy
areas. Sorrento is close enough that you could do a day trip to Naples if
you wanted, so that's what I'd do

My friend actually visited Naples alone last year and the trip was
actually quite plesant. She is Asian. People there are in general
very friendly to her. She says it is the same in Rome or Florence. I
think you should be fine.

Carole Allen:

Yes I read, probably a helluva lot more than you.

There are Asian Hindus, Muslims, Jews, etc.
In addition, Asia is a large area, to which one might include
Palestinians, Chinese, Burmese, Japanese, Indian, Bangadeshi, Nepalese,
etc., etc.''

Your remark, being sarcastic and in poor taste, showed a marked (to put
it politely) living with 'blinders' -- if that qualifies as 'living'.

Asian Chinese? Asian Indian? Doesn't matter - first I've heard of any
untoward racism in Italy.
Personally, Sorrento would be my choice any time. Far more attractive and a
better centre for touring.
