Default Mont St. Michel

I've heard from several on this newsgroup that it's best to experience this
place before and after the day trippers by staying overnight. I'm assuming
that all the places to stay in the town itself are quite overpriced, but just
in case, might somebody recommend a place that's affordable? Also, if I stayed
in one of the surrounding towns like Pontorson, how accesible is Mont St.
Michel at night and morning? After all, it's the experience of Mont St. Michel
that I'm trying to absorb here, not necessarily the outlying towns. I'm
planning on going around April 15-20, any help would be appreciated!

You should check out Jack's website, which is always useful. The link for
hotels in Mont St. Michel is:

Thanks, I've actually been researching that site quite a bit!

Staying on the Mont would be the best way to experience the atmosphere
when the other tourists have gone.
You can follow a an evening visit of the Abbey with a son et lumiere.

Most tourists keep to the main street with it's restaurants and gift
shops. There are several smal alleys to discover.
Go out the main entrance, turn right, go through another archway which
leads through the Gendarmerie built when Mont st Michel was a prison.
The lane leads up to a sharp bend where there is the Gabrial tower.
this used to be a windmill. Followinghis track up will lead you to the
base of the Abbey.
You can walk round the "Island" on the shore line and see St Auberts
chapel and well.
The ramparts were built during the Hundred years war rto keep the
English out. They never managed to take the mount.

I'd definitely stay overnight. It's an entirely different place after
the hordes have departed. One caveat. Stay away from the famous
omelette place - the name escapes me for now (Mere Poulard??) That
is unless you think it's a good time paying $30 for a plain omelette
served in 1 1/2 hours by a waiter who should be the poster boy for
French arrogance.

(Before Marie Lewis gets in her usual tizzy, this is a disclaimer that
French arrogance is a broad generalization and I am using this as an
attempt at humor, something which ML is seriously lacking.)

It's been quite awhile since I've visited, but I did stay in Pontorson
when I did (it is on the train line, closest town to the mont). I
remember that the train station did rent out bicycles, though we didn't
take advantage of that.

There was a bus to the mont, but it was very infrequent (at least back
then) something like 1 trip per day...we took the bus to the mont, end
ended up hitchiking back to Pontorson. I remembered being suprised that
there weren't more connections, since I'm sure many people would be
visiting by train...perhaps it has since improved. I don't remember the
name of the place in Pontorson, but it was near the train station, and
worked out well for us. We didn't want to have to worry about timing the
tides either, though it would have been nice to stay on the mont, we
hadn't budgeted much time for the visit.

we stayed last year in "Auberge St Pierre" where we got a superb room for 5
for a very decent price, given the fact that you are on the Mont (you can
find them by browsing through www.viamichelin.com)
The Mont is definitely a great experience at night, with the "mystical"
sound and light visit of the abbey.

Have a nice stay on the Mont

Before my travel partner got cold feet I was researching travel to Mt.St.M.
and found the marvelous Sawdays site ( http://sawdays.co.uk/ ) thanks to a
friend who travelled around France in the B&B places they mention. There
seem to be several in that area, some quite reasonable. I bought their book,
and can't wait to really do the trip I planned for this spring. (I'm going
to Greece alone instead! I refuse to be intimidated by the war OR the
terrorists!)

We stayed inside the walls at the Hotel Croix Blanche in 2001 and it
was quite reasonable. See http://clarke.zipsonic.com/2001FR/ for pix
and commentary. Definitely stay on the Mount. It's so incredibly
romantic walking the walls in the evening.

You'll be able to find decent hotel for not-so-expensive price. When I went there
last ime (two years ago), the "mere poulard" was a bit expensive for my 4 members
family, even their yummy omelette were. For food, just after mere Poulard, on the
left of main street, there was a surprisingly excellent creperie, with very good
galettes reasonably priced. I recommand the night visit in the underground of the
"merveillee", with visitors carrying real "torches" (i am not sure of this word)!
I also recommand a walk early in the morning around the Mont, especially to
Tombelaine, but beware of the tide and never go alone to Tombelaine cause of
moving/quick sands all around the Mont Saint Michel.

Have a nice time,

Yves

Well said Alan. When we were there we stopped in at Mere to inquire about lunch and,
after being told it would be over an hour just to get a table, we went to one of the
street vendors, bought a coupla subs, cokes and fries and had our lunch sitting on
the ramparts looking over the tidal flats toward the mainland. That was in 1985, on
the first of eight (to date) European trips and you know, we STILL talk about that
lunch today as one of the best in our travels.Doug Burke

I also stayed at La Croix Blanche (in September 2000) and found it
to be reasonable, given the location, even for one person - and very
worthwhile. I got up to see the sunrise, and it was worth it - beautiful,
and very peaceful, with only a couple people (and a lot of birds) as I
stood on the land outside the walls, watching the sun; this was not a
high tide. Sunset was wonderful, too - but the quiet at sunrise was
amazing. And I could see the top of the abbey all lit up at night from
my bedroom window.

Quite a way to spend my 50th birthday...

Warning: There's a spiral staircase to climb to get to the rooms.
