Milan - Hotel recommendations, please, and a liturgical question

I've just booked my summer flight to Italy, taking a few extra days. I want
to spend a long weekend in Milan before going to the lakes (again!).
Can anyone suggest a decent, reasonably priced hotel in the city for the
period 11-15 August? I'm not looking for anything mega-posh, but for a
friendly, clean place to lay my head. as Milan tends to be deserted at that
time of year, I hope it won't be too difficult to find somewhere. Obviously,
I've tried Google searches and have discovered some possibilities, but would
welcome personal recommendations.
One of the things I want to do (as an ecclesiastical "train spotter") is
attend Solemn Mass of the Assumption in the Ambrosian rite (probably at the
Cathedral or at Sant'Ambrogio). With the 15th falling on a Monday, will the
solemnity be celebrated in Italy on the day itself or, as in this country,
on the Sunday?

I've used:
Best Western
Hotel Cristoforo Colombo
a few times and find it to be good value and an excellent location
just by a metro station and walkable from the Duomo or the station.
Some rooms are a little small (but which European city hotel has huge rooms)
and the breakfast is a cold buffet.

Except when I've gone the big-bucks route, I've found that most
centrally located Milanese hotels are similarly soulless. No lobbies to
speak of--just a desk up a few luggage-unfriendly steps and a miniscule
elevator to "a clean place to put my head." Two where I've stayed are
the Hotel Florida, Via lepetit 33 (tel: 6705921) only a block or so
from the station, and the Hotel Cristallo, a few blocks further away
but still in walking distance. From a '99 article in the New York
Times, I jotted down two "budget" recos: 1) Gritti, 4 Santa Maria
Beltrade "with 48 modern rooms on a little square near the
Duomo...pleasant; 2) New York, 5 via Pirelli "with 70 no-frill rooms
opposite a skyscraper near the rail terminal...redone two years ago in
modern decor". The article also suggested the moderately priced Manin,
7 Via Manin between the station and the Duomo, looking out on gardens
and with a restaurant. Buon viaggio!

It will be August 15th, that is a festive day in Italy.
BTW, the Ambrosian rite in Italian is very similar to the Roman rite - a
casual observer may not spot the subtle differences, mainly:
- use of short antiphonas (now mainly spoken) as comments;
- Peace exchanged during the Offertory
- Credo proclaimed after the Offertory
- No Agnus Dei (substituted with an antiphona)
- an extra "Kyrie eleison" at the end.

Yeah, the peace at the offertory is very C of E! :-)
There's also the very impressive censing with a lidless "pot", and the
"lucernarium" at Vespers. I just thought I'd like to go on the Assumption
this year.
Thanks, by the way, to Giovanni Drogo, who e-mailed some useful info. Sorry
I couldn't respond directly, Giovanni, but you used your "nospam" address.

I usually stay at the Novotel Ca Grande which is about 30 minutes from downtown Milan, there is a less expensive Ibis next door in the same complex. There is also an Ibis in central Milan.
Look up Ibis or Novotel Milan if these locations do not suit
