We are going to Milan in February for a couple of days on a larger tour of
Europe. We are looking forward to seeing the Duomo and other sites, but
recently saw a picture of the cathedral with scaffolding all over the front
so that you could not see the front. I wonder if this is an older picture.
Can anyone let me know if this is how it is now?
Thanks for your help!

Long-term repairs seem to be in progress. It was scaffolded on the last two
occasions I've been there, most recently in August this year.

I've got a feeling I saw that it was planned to finish sometime in 2005 -
I'm going there in December (Christmas Shopping) so I'll try and keep an eye
open for any signs, if you ask again mid-december I might have an answer.

If the weather is good, be sure to go to the roof. You'll get an
interesting twist on the Duomo's construction and surroundings. As I
recall, the entry to the elevator is near the rear of the left side as you
face the cathedral. Don't miss La Scala

But get a combined ticket for the roof and the museum and visit the museum
first.

Which is currently closed for renovations but due to reopen 7th Dec this

Long term repairs are perpetual; to fix everything about fifty years are
needed, and then it is time to start again. The corporation that built
the Duomo (Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo) is in business since 1387 and
doing maintenance since the building was over. So, at any time you visit
the Duomo, you should expect to find some scaffolding somewhere.
As far as I remember, in August there was a scaffolding on the front.

In May, too. And there was a photograh or Milan's newest saint (we visited
just after her canonization.

About 35 minutes ago, there was still scaffolding on the front. I'll
have another look when I go out in a couple of hours to see if it's
still there then.

Thanks for all your help and suggestions. We are going in February so I hope
it the scaffolding will have moved to another point by then. I guess I am
hoping to get that famous front (west? - can never quite remember) facade
photo to add to my albums. We are definately going to go to the roof though
and the museum is also on our ever growing list.
Thanks again!

If you are near the Duomo at meal time then head into the Galleria (? the
worlds oldest covered shopping mall) go to the middle, turn right, follow to
the end of that road (out of the galleria) right at the end will be a very
nice litte pizzeria/restaurant.

Another place currently covered with scaffolding is Roslin Chapel
near Edinburgh in Scotland (they are trying to dry the roof out by
covering it with a big plastic tent). Most of the interesting stuff
is inside and unaffected by this, but there are carvings on the roof
you can now look at close up that you never normally see and which
aren't detailed in guidebooks.
Isn't Aya Sofya in Istanbul full of internal scaffolding at the moment?
If so can you walk round it?
I wonder if there's a niche for a Lonely Plank or Rough(cast) Guide
to Scaffolding? I want to see Karnataka close up!
