For me, Middlesbrough is a tourist destination! I have a very good
friend who lives there with whom I travel. I'll be there next month
before we head off to Scotland.

People living in Midds aren't called "Smoggies" for nothing! Coming
back into Midds from Scotland, what I thought was a charming morning
mist turned out to be an all day smog.

In that case Heathrow is a tourist destination :-)
It may well be if the BA baggage strike goes ahead on August bank
holiday

(30th August, maybe days around?) nothing official yet but ballot
went (just) for a strike.

How MANY "days around"? And would that affect "checked through" baggage
of travelers in transit from the US, with continuing flights on BA?

The other Trades Union involved still has to declare the result of their ballot.
Will happen (the ballot declaration) on Wednesday (I think). If a strike is to
happen, and that is by no means certain then yes, it will also affect passengers
transferring onto BA flights.

It's all perfectly safe - especially the centre of town, if you are
wearing a NUFC shirt. Just ask the friendly bar tender for a "pint of
broon, canny lad" and the whole bar will drink to your health.

Well, the group is for european travel. If you wanted specific advice
for a particular area, there are better newsgroups, for instance
uk.local.teesside.

It seems to be mainly porno spam.

To what extent? If baggage is "checked through" to final destination,
but connecting flight to that destination is via BA, does that mean
luggage will A) be unaffected, B) arrive on a later flight or C) never
leave LHR? Also, am I panicking unnecessarily - will the strike be over
by the time I fly to Paris on 15 September? (I understand that most
strikes in Europe are for an announced number of days - not like the
super-market workers' strike, here, that dragged on for several months.)

I received this email from BA today
You may have seen reports in the media that the outcome of a GMB union
ballot was announced today. Regrettably the ballot result is in favour of
industrial action, however we want to continue talking to our unions and
remain hopeful of a solution.
Should you have a booking with British Airways, I would advise you not to
change your travel plans at this stage, as we are hopeful of avoiding a
dispute. However, work on contingency planning has begun and our priority is
to minimise any disruption to our customers.
British Airways continues to operate a normal schedule and I would like to
stress there is currently no industrial action set. We will continue to
update you as the situation may evolve. In the meantime for the latest
flight information please visit <http://ba.com>
Yours sincerely

Thank you very much. My flight was booked through American - I wonder
if they'll bother to notify me? (I've bookmarked the BA site referred
to in their e-mail, just in case.)
