mastercard and visa in Italy

<br>We intend to take master card and visa cards as cash and credit money to France and Italy. The intention is to put cash on one card for cash withdrawals, and use the other one for purchases on credit. <br>Are there any problems with that idea? <br>Are there better ways to carry cash? <br>We are travelling from Australia. <br>Thanks <br>Andrea</html |

Be very cautious both countries Italy & France are packed jam with pickpockets and all kind of people waiting for your money.
Never carry your passport with you, i got robbed in both countries and my passport +l my credit cards were stolen and I am French! Carry as little cash as you can and traveller checks are best, never carry 2 credit cards at the same time. Also I don't know if you plan on renting a car to travel in France but you have to know that the last popular way to get robbed is when you stop on the road (any road at any time). Coming from nowhere a car stop behind you a guy comes to you like if he wants to ask you something and in less than 5 minutes all your belongings are gone. In both countries do not expect cops to do anything, they couldn't care less. I don't know for Italy but in France Visa and Mastercard are OK you can't use Discover and Amex people don't take it unless you go in a very expensive hotel. |

In general debit or ATM cards work better than putting cash in a credit card account.
Also the fees for cash advances (yes, they call it an advance even if you prepay) are often higher. Check with your local financial institutions about fees. Availability should be fine. I meant do not carry your passport with you while you are abroad, once it's stolen
your trip becomes very different. I thought everybody will understand i didn't mean "come to france without a passport". I am afraid you are not aware at all of how bad security has become in France..... as a french citizen i can tell you that your joke is everything but fun. Doesn't French law mandate that everybody must carry identification at all times? Anyway, I'd advise carrying your credit card(s) in a money belt and withdrawing cash from ATMs. That way, if a robber gets your wallet, he may get a day or two's worth of spending money but nothing more. Hotels are required to fill out a form with the names and passport (or Italian ID) information. If the desk clerk is not very busy when you arrive, he will often do this while you wait. More often, he asks you to leave the passport (or ID card) and he gives it back to you later, usually the next time he sees you. Once in Spain, a pension owner refused to give us back our passports until we had checked out and paid. He said this was to ensure he got paid. This was one of the disaster lodgings recommended by the Rough Guide. Barbara |

They don't need to keep the passport, they just need the info in it. They will tell you they need it, but they don't and just mean to enter your info on a form required by the police at their convenience. Then keep your passport as safely as you keep your bank card. Be sure to get your copy back, too, because if something should happoen to your passport, that copy will make it much easier to get a replacement at the nearest legation. |
