I'm in Marseille for the weekend at the end of August - principally
for the Rugby international between France and England, but also a
mini-break to boot.
Looking for any suggestions for stuff to see, do - and eat!
Not interested in clubbing or discos, "shopping" or "organised tours",
but certainly have time for bars, restaurants (grand and simple),
walking, history, architecture, local culture, cafes, and generally
most things that can be done "at leisure".
And here's to an England win ;-)
Cheers

bonjour
in Marseilles itself, the nicest thing is to take the ship to the
islands, it is a nice ride
if you can rent a car, and drive to Provence, Luberon, around marseilles
it is lovely
the stadium is not in Marseilles anyway so you might as well sleep outside
have a nice trip

Notre Dame de la Garde is the church that looks out onto Marseille
harbor, the view is incredible. If you have a car the drive along the
coast from Marseille to Cassis is memorable and Cassis is a usually
quaint town that from time to time becomes a tourist spot and is IMHO
not so quaint. Be sure to have Bouillabaisse down by the old port, watch
the restaurants to see which are all tourists and which have a more
local flavor, but then I would say go with the local crowd, a charming
restaurant with no customers is usually that way for a reason.
Service may be better if France wins ;-)

There is a short boat trip out to the Chateau d'If built in the 16c and
where the Count Of Monte Christo was imprisoned.

I don't believe there ever was a count though?

You will be saying that there was not a Scarlet Pimpernel next or a fourth
Musketeer.
