The distance from the airport to the Marseille train station is about 12.5
mi / 20 km as the crow flies. Autoroute A7 is pretty direct and not much
farther.
IMO, one hour is far too short a time for comfort. I would _never_ consider
that schedule. Planes can be late, you know.
Salon-de-Provence isn't much farther than Marseille from the airport. Does
the train stop there? Aix-en-Provence is closer than Marseille, though over
"lesser" roads (that might be less crowded).
If I were in his shoes, I'd strongly consider renting a car and driving the
130 km to Montelimar. It's Autoroute A7 all the way. Not cheap, but ... a
taxi airport to Marseille won't be cheap either. Driving would likely be
faster than going into Marseille and taking the train. He has far too
little time to take an airport bus to catch that train. I wonder if there
is bus/van service from the airport to Mantelimar. For example, I know that
there are buses from the Lyon airport to rather distant places.

Just looking at sncf site to book onward train journey.
There's a train from Marseille St Charles Station at 1606. Will this be

Where is he going? (other transportation options may be available) an
hour is not very long for the distance and traffic in Marseille can be a
hassle (and the distance from the airport to St Charles is for what it
is worth almost the same as from the airport to Aix in Provence)
Assuming all goes well he could do it in a cab.

He's going to Montelimar, there's a train leaving at 1606

There's also a train at 1703 perhaps this may be a better option.
I may have to revise the return journey as well.
His return flight is on the following Tuesday at 1755. I was goig to suggest
the train arriving in Marseille at 1445.

the shuttle leaves every 20 minutes and takes 25 minutes leaves on the
10,30 and 50 minutes per http://www.mrsairport.com/. I note from the
SNCF page that your husband doesn't really have an option for a later
train. The shuttle is only 8.50 euro but a cab (approx 37 euro per the
Marseille airport site) might give a little peace of mind especially if
he misses the shuttle at 5:10 for any reason.

I was thinking you wrote arrival at 4:45pm (1645 as it were) for a 1806
train. He could take the TGV to Avignon from Aix TGV departing at 16.44
and arrive in Montelimar at 20:25 (two change of trains) cost would be
31.30 and 7.50 for the shuttle bus..

Thanks
It looks like it will be far more sensible to opt for the 1703 train
arriving Montelimar at 1909, this also avoids a change at Avignon.
He can then catch the shuttle bus- and have plenty of time for a coffee at
the station.
Hiring a car isn't really an option as he has a lift arranged from
Montelimar.

If he goes by taxi to the train station, he could choose
Pas-des-Lanciers 17:19 or Rognac 17:25 instead of Marseille-St. Charles.
It's the same train 17712 to Montélimar - Lyon.

Thanks everyone for your imput.
He's going to catch the shuttle bus to Gare St. Charles. I've reserved his
train ticket on the sncf website - which he will pay for at the station.
He should have plenty of time. - thanks to the advice from here
