Do:
Use the local bus services - buy a 1/3/5 day ticket. Much better than
tours.
Take a sailing boat around the island - only way to see the Dingli cliffs.
Take a day in Gozo - try the jeep safari.
Visit the old temple sites on Malta and Gozo.
Eat fish!
Go see the glass blowers
Take the harbours boat tour around the Grand harbour and Sliema Harbour.
Bring euros to Malta - much better exchange rate. They use euro from Jan 1
2008 so all prices are in both currencies - ATMs charge commission
Take a half day to just walk the backstreets of Valletta.
If you like to walk - get to Comino and walk the cliffs.
Try a sunset cruise on a sailing boat
Avoid:
TGI Fridays in Sliema - it's simply dirty - with service to match.
The Victoria Hotel in Sliema - it's a building site - I know because I
stayed there.
The scam merchants everywhere selling timeshare (they don't call it that -
it starts with a simple survey)
Looking for beaches - there are almost none - those that exist are very
crowded.
The jellyfish in the sea - a real problem.
Hope that helps any intending visitors

I've often hired a 4x4 in Spain but never been on one of the safaris,
as far as I can see customers drive several of the vehicles, not sure
I trust young Hans with my safety and comfort.

I would have thought that unless your holiday destination
is Disney one should avoid TGI Fridays everywhere.

We went to one for lunch inCairo. We were wandering around near the zoo,
and it was the only place that was open. (This was during Ramadan.) It
was OK- but I was pissed off that the we were given a cocktail menu, and
then when I was in the mood for one I saw, told us 'no alcohol' because
it was Ramadan.

Only if you intend to use the bus more than 3-5 times a day or use the
"tourist" premium fare routes. Otherwise you'll be better off buying
single tickets.
