Does anyone know if the luggage storage lockers at Amsterdam Central
Station are still in operation? I have 8 hours to kill between
Schiphol and a train to Haarlem and would like to leave my baggage
during a quick shopping run down Kalverstraat!
Thanks for any recent intel.

They are still there but I doubt if they will hold a moderately large
suitcase.

There was a manned area where larger cases could be stored last time I was
there.

Yes as of last year the downstairs left luggage area was looking very
much open. They have both medium and large lockers and a manned hatch
to a storage room.

Shopping streets in most Dutch towns being identical these days why not just
grab the first opportunity to go to Haarlem and shop there after you've
dropped of your luggage wherever you're staying...

As of Jan 03 there were plenty of lockers plus a manned baggage check
room at A'dam Centraal Station. Schiphol Airport and Haarlem station
also have lockers.
If you need information about Haarlem write back. I've lived there and
know it well.

You know that trains from Schiphol to Haarlem come as often as every 10
minutes, right?

Where exactly is the manned area? I've regularly got 6 hours to kill at AMS.

You might take the bus (the Zuid Tangent = bus number 300) which is in
my opinion the best/cheapest way to travel to Haarlem train station.
This bus goes every 15 minutes. The platform is opposite the main
entrance at Schiphol airport. The buses were red when I went last
year.

I forgot to add that there are plenty of lockers at the Harrlem train
station. I don't remember the cost of the lockers but the buses I
mentioned in my previous post cost 3-4 euros and were very roomy and
comfortable. The trip took about 20 minutes which is the same as the
train into Amsterdam.

right in the middle of the lockers at Amsterdam centrall station.
Inside the station building, turn left just before you get out of the
station (main Amsterdam exit, not the back exit to the boats.
It wasn't cheap, but I don't remember how much.

According to the timetable, the bus #300 takes about 40 minutes from
Schiphol to Haarlem. Fare is EUR 5.60.

Connexxion bus 300 took about 45 minutes for me and required 8 strips of
a Strippenkaart. A 15 strip Strippenkaart cost 6.20 euro in 2003, thus
one trip was about 3.30 euro. You should be able to use the same stamp
to board another bus to take you anywhere in Haarlem, e.g. the Grote
Markt. That's only a 10 minute walk but would normally cost you 2
strips, about 0.83 euro.
Bus 300 is a reticulated beauty and is certainly the most convenient way
to get between Haarlem and Schiphol.

Thanks, everyone, for the great information on luggage storage at
Amsterdam CS. It sounds as if there are a couple of good options:
lockers and manned (or womanned, as the case might be!) storage area.
Thanks also for transport advice. I know about the train from
Schiphol to Amsterdam CS; as well as trains from Amsterdam CS to
Haarlem, which leave at :20 and :50 pretty much all day and evening.
Making the Schiphol-to-Haarlem transfer at Sloterdijk is immaterial to
me, however. I do want to get downtown and spend my euros before
heading out to the west. I'm actually headed not to Haarlem, but to
Santpoort-Noord, where my employer is locking me up in a castle of
some sort for a 5 day planning session. If I'm lucky, I may find the
time to get to Haarlem for an evening - presuming that anything
happens in Haarlem in the evening.

Haarlem evenings are very nice. Go to the Lange Veerstraat, Riviervis
Markt, the Grote Markt, and other areas for cafes and bars. What
'happens' is up to you.
