Default Lugano, Transportation to

Can anyone tell me anything about what public transportation (bus or train)
is available from either Stresa or Bellagio to Lugano? A link to a web site
with prices, schedules, etc. would be great if you have one. I've searched,
but didn't find what I was looking for.

The road from Lugano to Menaggio, through Porlezza, is rather
uninteresting and it is no great bus ride to go over. To make up for
that, you would get just to the ferry to go over to Bellagio.
Taking a train to Como San Giovanni, and thence the fast ferryore, is
surely a more relaxed journey.
The railroad statrion in Como is at hardly a walking distance from the
lake, if you havve any lagguage, though.

P.s. Only a week ago I passed through Lugano on my way right to my
relatives' in Menaggio, on my bicycle.

You (servadio) seem to have a funny concept of what is interesting or
not, at least one I do not agree with. :-) You found Viterbo
uninteresting, and now you find this route uninteresting. Hmm...

Anyhow, to go back to the original poster request, I have no detailed
answers, because the routes you ask for cover different states and
different regions.

About Bellagio to Lugano there is no direct train or bus connection. You
have to take the ferry to Menaggio, then I do not know about the buses
continuing towards Switzerland. As said above, the first part of the
road (Menaggio-Porlezza) runs through a somewhat wide valley (won't call
it unpleasant or uninteresting though) and is entirely in Italy.
Porlezza is on the tip of lake Lugano, which has a complex shape. Both
coasts of this tip are italian, up to Valsolda on the east shore (and
this is nice scenery) ... and that should be covered by some bus. Maybe
there is also a shipping service from Porlezza to Lugano, I do not know,
if so it should be run by the swiss.

You might look at this site for all bus and train timetables within the
region of Lombardy : http://www.trasporti.regione.lombardia.it/trl_index.htm

That includes also navigation on lake Como and lake Maggiore (though
that's half in Piedmont), but not lake Lugano or cross-border buses
(probably). No, correction, it shows also the timetables of lines
C12 Menaggio-Lugano and C827 (the swiss line referred below).
I can't give you URLs because this is a bloody dynamic site. But do

- visualizza tutti gli orari (view all timetables)
- tutte le linee ... dal comune di ... (top link)
- enter "Menaggio" in the form

and you'll have the list of all lines, choose the two codes above

I know the swiss Post runs a bus from St. Moritz to Lugano via Italy. I
know it comes down to the northern tip of lake Como via Maloja Pass,
then I do not know the route, but Menaggio-Porlezza seems the shortest
and most logical one. If there are no limitations at collecting
passengers in Menaggio that could be a sensible way of going.

Otherwise, hydrofoil to Como, then walk (not long, not short, I'd walk
without luggage), bus or taxi to Como San Giovanni station (NOT Como
Lago FNM Station !), then trains (local or international fast trains) to
Lugano

Concerning Stresa to Lugano, Stresa is on the Piedmont shore of lake
Maggiore, on the Milan-Simplon railway line. Both directions are quite
out of the way for Lugano ... however you can always come by train to
Milan and take the train to Como and Lugano. THAT I would rank
uninteresting.

Some of the ships on lake Maggiore go up to Locarno, which is on the
northern top of the lake and in Switzerland. I suppose there is a train
service from there to Lugano across the Monte Ceneri (I'm not sure if it
goes all the way to Bellinzona and back). This should be pleasant (on
the lake) and reliable (swiss railways).

Any other route seems to me more complicated. Taking a ferry to Laveno
(in Lombardy) and then a (state) train to Luino-Pino-Locarno ... I
believe that line has a very low frequency ... then Locarno-Lugano as
above.

Otherwise from Laveno take a (FNM) train to Varese, and then some bus to
Lugano. Varese is very close to the swiss border, and I know people who
live there who go there often for shopping, or to catch a train in
Lugano. However there is no direct rail connection. There is a (state)
rail connection from Varese to Ponte Tresa which is on another branch of
lake Lugano.

Caveats : Laveno has two stations and so has Varese. One is for the
state railways (FS) and the other for Ferrovie Nord Milano (FNM). In
Laveno the FNM station is just at the pier. I do not know where the
other is. In Varese the two are within walking stations (it's just a
matter of "turning around the corner" ... I once was queing up in one,
and the queue was so long, that I ran to the other to catch an earlier
train.

Let me just not comment on yours.

Here, I have a quite differring piece of knowledge, and this is not
just a matter of opinable taste.
There are coaches connecting Lugano to Saint Moritz, certainly going
through ugly Porlezza. I bet they would take a passanger just as far as
Menaggio, if he has to go no farther.
