Hello!

I am looking for some help from the group here....

I am starting to plan a trip to London for three people. I have been
to London several times (but several years ago), and I am bringing two
people who have never been.

I am looking to plan a low-cost (I know it's not cheap, but I'm trying
to make this a budget trip) vacation to London.

I plan to fly there for about 1 week. I will spend 4 days in London,
and then travel to Liverpool to spend time with my family that lives
there.

Can you make suggestions on the best itinerary to follow and helpful
hints? (Should I buy a London Pass?)

Any suggestions on a hotel that can accomodate 3 people at a reasonable
cost? How are the "Travel Inn" hotels?

Any help you can provide at all would be greatly appreciated!

I have stayed and plan to stay at the County Hall Travel Inn again this
summer. It is a great location... some rooms even have a view of the
Thames. It does lack interior charm, but facilities are modern.

Premier Travel Inns are modern, clean and very comfortable. However they are
'no frills' so don't expect room service and a pool :-p. But most do have a
bar/resaurant attached.

However in London IMO they are quite expensive, you might be able to do
better on price but at least you know with TI that the quality is up to a
good standard.

The Travelodge chain is of similar (well slight inferior quality IMO),
but they tend to have better rates in London, especially if you book
well ahead for specials.

Yes, I often make use of the travelodge special deals (in fact I stayed in
Newcastle using one yesterday and will do so again tonight)
You are right that their quality is slightly inferior, however I would only
let it sway me if the costs were relatively similar. If you book in advance
and are lucky you can get rooms for £26 per night, or £46 in London, however
they have a no-cancellations requirement.

The biggest difference for me is the bathrooms, travelinn have nice showers
and lovely big baths, whereas travelodge have tiny baths and showers which
can vary but sometimes are no better than a dribble, some of the places look
quite old. They do have more rooms with sofa beds than travelinn so you
could potentially get more people in the rooms.

I've been in the Newcastle one near the river when I did some work at

I have stayed in the TI County Hall, and although there were only two of us,
the room was large and had a daybed in addition to the large queen bed.
Even though the TI hotels in London are definitely on the high end of
moderately priced, I can't think of another possibility for accommodating
three people more reasonably or comfortably.

Now the Easy Hotel is most interesting. I'd be happy to have
a low cost private room with some kind of bathroom even if it
is just a cubicle.

I managed to find some cheap B+Bs in Paddington, Victoria and King's Cross from around £35/room/night (all very well placed locations for going around London).

As for London on the cheap, you could:
Visit the musuems which are now all free (V&A, Science Musuem, Natural History in South Kensington, or British Museum, Tate (Modern also).
See the Albert Hall and memorial as well as Hyde Park
Go to Portebello market
Chinatown/East end for ethinicity and not too expensive meals.
Covent Garden is good on a Sunday but expensive to eat out there - students from the Royal College of Music would busk there as I recall.
Bucky palace, Harrods and Harvey Nics!
Cutty Sark, Royal Observatory and Royal Naval College but this would mean getting the DLR but the latter 2 are free to roam around. The park is also nice.
For a cheap dinner after a hard day of the museums/shopping like a lunatic in and around South Kensington, the crepes at the restaurant close to the station exit (on Exhibition Road) are better than in France (as my French partner says!). Also Upper Street in Angel has cheap places to eat if you're staying in King's Cross.
For getting around, the buss pass works out way cheaper than the travel card and is also a good way to see the sights for free. But only if you're not in a hurry to go anywhere. You can get info on travel on the Transport for London website www.tfl.gov.uk
