London - Munich (Oktoberfest!)
Hello everyone,
I've left my planning for Oktoberfest a little late and have found flights from London to Munich for the opening weekend to be very expensive. I'm trying to find a creative (and cheap!) way to get from London to Munich for Friday 16th - 19th September. What I've looked at is maybe flying to Prague as it's only about £40 (GBP) return compared to about £200 for Munich. And then getting a train from Prague to Munich. Or maybe a flight to Venice for £30 return and then a night train to Munich. Does anyone know how to look at train times and prices for the train journeys I mentioned? Or has anyone got a better idea of how I could get to Munich? Maybe there is a city I could fly to and get a train that is nearer than Prague, I really don't mind where I fly to as long as I can get to Munich from there! Any ideas?? Many Thanks, Dave |

How about flying to Salzburg or Stuttgart from London? You might be able to find a complete package for less than the air fares. -- Martin |

Germanwings flies from London Stanstead to Stuttgart, and the tickets should be inexpensive (possibly as low as 40 euros roundtrip). Munich should be then about 1 1/2 hours by train. Alternatively, you could travel about a week later and just stay in Stuttgart and enjoy the Canstatter Volksfest which is about 1/2 the size of Munich's and Germany's second largest, that runs from 24Sept to 9Oct. You've had lots of other suggestions, but if you're still interested in the Prague suggestion, train times are available at http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en (enter PRAHA and MUENCHEN as origin and destination) - for an adult it offers a fare of 49 euro second class single, through train, and 46.70 euro for a routing with 3 changes of train. The Czech railways international fare calculator at http://www.jizdenka.cz/IT.aspx (Vydejna Praha, Z Praha Do Muenchen) gives a 2nd class single fare of 1446 Kc (47.40 euro). Oh, by the way, Prague Public Transport's fares are going up on 1st July, for the first time in 7 years - basic adult single fare on the metro/trams/buses goes up from 14 Kc to 20 Kc (about 40p). >Or has anyone got a better idea of how I could get to Munich? Prague-Munich train will be slow. Why not STN-NUE r/t on Air Berlin? Fly out Thursday evening at 8.30pm, arr NUE 11.55pm, stay overnight in Nürnberg, then take the train (less than 2 hours) to Munich on Fri morning. Take train back to NUE on Monday, fly out at 7.20 in the evening. R/T price is €132.47, or about £90 - a *lot* less expensive than £200! Hint: www.skyscanner.net will aid you in being creative (and cheap!). -- dgs |

Ryanair to Friedrichshafen. All in: 52 pounds. you need to buy the train ticket in two parts as the 'bayern' fare from Lindau is better value than the normal fare. tim |

flights from London to Munich for the opening weekend to be very expensive. I'm trying to find a creative (and cheap!) way to get from London to Munich for Friday 16th - 19th September. What I've looked at is maybe flying to Prague as it's only about £40 (GBP) return compared to about £200 for Munich. And then getting a train from Prague to Munich. Maybe there is a city I could fly to and get a train that is nearer than Prague, I really don't mind where I fly to as long as I can get to Munich from there! Any ideas?? Fly Southampton (only 1 hour from London Waterloo) to Salzburg with Flybe, then a short rail journey to Munich. |
