Look through all the standard sites (www.qixo.com and www.flights.com are
good). Consider Priceline or Hotwire, with all their attendant pitfalls.

I was going to suggest Hotwire too until I looked at their offer for those
dates--it was between two thousand and three thousand dollars depending upon
the date of departure!

bid inthe $600 region

In that case, incredible as it might seem, this approach might
actually work for the original poster.
Get a cheap flight to Vancouver (YVR) - by whatever means. (Maybe $250
if you are lucky - Priceline, Alaska Air, whatever.)
Take Air Transat (a charter airline) from Vancouver to Frankfurt. Try
http://www.airtransat.com - you will get a price of about $800 US for
a purchase right now when all taxes and fees are considered.
If you do this, leave yourself lots and lots of time - everything is
nonrefundable and the two airlines won't cooperate.
Of course, act quickly if you choose this method.
