Default LA/UK/Marseille trip planning

I'm planning a trip from home in Los Angeles to take in 1) Marseille,
and 2) London for a week each in latter August (earliest departure
8/11, latest return 8/26). I'm trying to piece together the legs of
the trip.

Simplest is to buy a single, triangular air itinerary either
LA-Marseille-London-LA or LA-London-Marseille-LA. Looks like that
could be done for maybe $1300. (Meantime teaser ads in the LA Times
newspaper talk about LA-London roundtrips for 30% of that. Not
realistic I expect.)

What I'm unsure of is possible alternatives involving getting between
the 2 European cities by surface means. I'd like to consider it. Like,
the chunnel between London and Paris and the TGV train between Paris
and Marseille. Those means of travel could be interesting for their
own sake.

It looks (my internet research on this started only this afternoon)
like the surface approach will be 1) expensive, and 2) hard to
integrate with the intercontinental air legs. I don't know if it's to
be forgotten, or if forgetting it would be premature.

If you have any relevant knowledge or experiences, suggestions will be
gratefully received.

It is. This is some of the longest highs speed trains journeys one can
make... your suggested aproach (Marseilles - Paris, then Paris London) is
not the best one though, as it would involve changing stations in Paris.

Better would be to get either:

TGV from Marseilles to Lille. Then Eurostar from Lille to London. This
involves a relatively easy change in Lille. When booked in advance some
intersting reductions can be had, but I doubt these trains are open for
booking yet.

The other option is the direct Avignon - London train that runs in summer.
The timetable of that train isn't known yet though.

I do not understand what you mean with "hard to integrate with the
intercontinental air legs as you're staying a week in both London and
Marseilles...

Just go to www.sncf.fr and try to look up/book Marseilles - London. Several
connections are available daily, avoid the ones that make you change in
Paris. Duration of the trip is about 7 hours. The problem is that no site
will give you prices yet, as the trains haven't opened for reservation yet.
They usually do so two months before departure.
Marseilles - Lille can be had for EUR 60,-
With Eurostar the problem is that returns are cheaper then singles. Cheapest
return -s EUR 70,- I do not have experience with using just one half of a
return ticket.

On British Airways, you should be able to get a reasonably priced
round-trip from LA to Marseille with London as a stopover. This would
probably be the cheapest option. Don't book it directly from their
website - go to a consolidator like the ones in the LA Times ads.
Keep in mind that August is high-season; you should expect to pay
significantly more than the $400 in the current LA Times ads (but
nowhere near $1300).

Or get a cheap round-trip from LA to London, and do Marseille as a
round trip from there using a "low-cost" airline.

I took the Marseille->Paris train last summer, and it was wonderful.
It only took about two hours, and cost around 70 euros. You avoid the
hassle of airport security, the discomfort of air travel, and the time
and cost of going to and from airports that are well outside of the
cities, and you get a great view of the countryside. Combine that
with the Eurostar and you'd get from London to Marseille in one day.
Look for special offers on the Eurostar - they often give deep
discounts for off-peak times booked well in advance, but it's very
expensive if you book it last minute.

Three hours, please.
