LA to ROME via ZURICH
 
Hello All,

I would like to go to Rome from LA via Zurich.

I have friends in both Zurich and Rome and I am planning to stay with
them.

What is the best way of purchasing a ticket for such a trip.

I have called a couple of agents and I can get a summer time ticket to
Rome for $850 (via Zurich) however I cannot stay in Zurich, I have to
change flights right away.

If I opt for a 4 day stay in Zurich the ticket price goes up 45%.

Is this a normal airline pricing practice?

Also, if you can suggest me how and where to look for a ticket I would
greatly appreciate your advice.

A ticket either does or does not allow stopovers. More expensive ones
always do.

You could buy a ticket with an open jaw. LA-ZUR and ROM-LA, which
should cost about the same as your current best offer. Then you buy
either a ticket ZUR-ROM, or take the train. If flying LH, they have a
Europe for sale deal for $90 per leg, or so.

Also check consolidator tickets. Some allow stopovers.

Check with Alitalia for a one way. The train is not expensive, but
that is a long way to go by train.

I tried doing a "Mutli-city" trip on Expedia and got a fare of 1145 on CO
through EWR...

The dates might not match up exactly but it worked out..
