Default Just back from France

Just back from annual trip to France and pleased to report that nobody got
odd with me over the Iraq war or anything like that. We had a few
experiences though:

- we drove to Paris (St Briac-sur-Mer to Paris) to stay for a few days. I
had originally planned to go by train but figured that if I drove I could
stop the car if the kids got restless and this wouldn´t be really possible
on the train :-) . This turned out to be a good idea because when we got to
France we discovered that our planned travel dates were coinciding with an
SNCF strike. En-route we got caught up in an "Operation Escargot" where the
traffic is slowed down by cars going at around 20 mph. After about 30mins we
got past them by imitating the driving manoeuvres of the natives (hard
shoulders and merge lanes were involved). The motorway was quite and much
easier that going Cork-Dublin.

- we stayed in the BB Hotel in Paris-Malakoff - its visible from the
Peripherique - the carpark is underground and with the roofbox our car was
too high so we had to park in the yard..The hotel itself is grand and clean.
The rooms have aircon which was great. Ours had a very steep stairs to the
mezzanine which wouldn´t be good for kids.

- Paris was mad ! On our first day the metro barriers were not checking
tickets (strike) and some stations were closed (demonstrations). Near
Galleries Lafayette we saw gridlock like I had never seen before (strike &
demonstrations). Some cars were in such positions that you would wonder how
they got there. Nerves were frazzled and police were out in immense numbers.

- weather was hot and rubbish was lying in some places. The metro is not
suitable for children's buggies. People were a little bit grumpy in some
places. The city is still beautiful and we´d all go back in a shot.

The rest of the holiday was spent in St Briac with a few daytrips here and
there. This part of Brittany is beautiful and the weather was in the
mid-to-late twenties except for last Sunday which hit 36celsius. As usual St
Malo was well worth a few visits as was Dinard and its gorgeous "Clair de la
Lune" promenade.

This started off as a response to the "I´m going to France am I safe?"
postings.. I forgot to mention I was from Ireland and had got the ferry to
France (Brittany Ferries - recommend them anytime).

This was our fourth year in France and we still haven´t seen everything in
Brittany let alone what the rest of the country has to offer...
