June hotel availability in Rothenburg & Fussen?
I've considered getting some "preliminary" reservations in these towns
knowing how busy they can get, but the cancellation policies are horrible
- like a MONTH or you lose one day's tarrif. I really don't like the idea
of spending a bunch of time roaming around searching for a hotel, but I
don't want to be completely locked into a schedule either.
Does anyone know if these hotels get really booked up, or is most of the
tourist traffic day trips from bigger cities? I'm inclined to just get
hotels as we go (or at least book a day ahead during the trip), but I'm
not sure how easily I can get a triple.
The phone numbers are really confusing too. Most have 9 numbers, but some
have 8 or 10.

I wouldn't bet on getting a room you'd want in either place. If you
really want to go there, what's wrong with reserving a room in advance?
Can't you make a solid plan in advance for those two places?

Yikes BB - they are both must sees, so why worry about not needing the room
down the road? And, being "must sees" you will not find something you are
happy with - either price or comfort - if you try to find it on the fly.
Some people will criticize Rothenburg, but if you stay overnight it is a
magical place. Take the Night Watchman tour or kick yourself forever.

This cancellation policy is standard - but you only have to pay if they
can't let the room again.

Triples are very uncommon in Germany. In this case the best is to book in
advance.
You can try a hotel booking service like
http://www.hrs.com
(no risk at all if you can turn up at the booked hotel before 6pm)

There is no unique length of phone numbers in Germany.
The area code can have 3-6 numbers (incl. leading zero). The individual
phone number can be 3,4,5,6,7, ... numbers long.

If you are traveling by car, consider staying across the border at
Reutte, Austria instead of in Fussen. Prices can be lower.
We stayed at the Hotel Maximilian in Ausust of 2001.
www.maxihotel.com
Very friendly English speaking family run hotel on the outskirts of
Reutte. Great breakfast buffet. Hotel has a restaurant, bar, high speed
internet access, and charm. It was recommended by Rick Steves (if anyone
cares).
You can visit Neuschwanstein, Hohenschwangau, and Linderhof castles as
well as spend a few hours in Oberammeragu shoping for clocks or
christmas decorations. Reutte can also offer the experience of hang
gliding and a luge run (you go down the run on little waggons in the
summer).

Well, the main reason I wasn't making reservations was because a couple
months ago I asked this newsgroup if it was a good idea, and a lot of
people said to just find rooms as I go! Granted, I didn't specify the
locations (I didn't have them nailed down yet).
Mainly I just wanted some flexibility to stay a day longer or leave a day
sooner along the way. Sounds like that's not possible during the busy
season. Oh, well. Better that I know NOW.

That's the plan!
Thanks to everyone for the info.

We strolled into Rothenburg one afternoon in late June, checked in at
the Tourist Bureau and had them book us a B&B for the night. I think
most Europeans will not be on vacation until very late June or into
July. I think you'll be OK without reservations, but please don't
hold me to it.
