Italy transportation advice?

My husband and I will be visiting Sorrento, Siena and Venice in May. We
definitely do not want a rental car while in Sorrento or Venice, but would
like to have a car while we are in Siena.
I need advice... are we better off renting a car as we leave Sorrento and
dropping it off when we get to Venice (I've seen some companies that let you
do this), OR should we travel to and from Siena by train/bus, and
pickup/drop-off the rental car while in Siena?
My biggest concerns about taking trains or buses to and from Siena are that
it might take longer than traveling by car would, and that we wouldn't have
the opportunity to stop and explore if we passed something that looked
interesting. On the other hand, I wonder if we'll spend a lot of time stuck
in traffic if we travel to and from Siena by car.
Thanks in advance,
Sarah

You will probably get a lot of conflicting answers to this question, but if
it were me, I would get the car in Sorrento and drop it off in Venice. There
are probably a lot of places that I would want to stop along the way.

Travelling by train: from Sorrento to Naples it takes one hour with
Circumvesuviana (or a little bit more or less), then from Naples to
Florence with an Eurostar you can reach the destination in 3h35m and
then from Florence to Siena is just another 1h30m ... it's not the
shortest trip you can do, but...
Travelling by car: you must reach the Napoli-Salerno highway and this
can be a really jammed piece of the route... then from Naples to
Siena, driving at the speed limit, you should employ at least three
ours... but you must pass thru the GRA around Rome, and that can be
jammed too... I don't know how much exactly does it take, then but
according to this site www.kwmappe.com it's at least 5 hours...

THIS is what you should consider: in my opinion, there are some places
you will enjoy a lot, but you should know them in advance, because
from the highway you won't see very much...

Yes, it can happens, but mostly you won't be on urban routes, so you
should avoid it (apart of those two usually jammed routes i mentioned
above)
