how long to drive from Bath to Winchester?
plan to be with the family in Bath in early June and will take a day
trip to see Glastonbury and Wells (including the Evensong in Wells). thinking about a day trip to Winchester from Bath. will there be enough time to do a visit justice while driving from Bath to Winchester, view the town and cathedral and then drive back to Bath and arrive for dinner time? how long a drive is it from Bath to Winchester? the maps don't tell the "real" story so wondering if anyone has experience doing this. if you suggest spending the night in Winchester, any suggested B&Bs? steve |

From experience I would say about an hour and a half. There is also a 1/2 hourly train service, with a change at Southampton Central, which again takes about 1 1/2 hours. Winchester is so compact you don't need a car, and anyway parking is extortionate. |

And, if the OP hans't done so previously Stonehenge and Salisbury stand out as possible en route stops (one each way). I'd agree with the train option - times can be found here http://ojp.nationalrail.co.uk/planmyjourney/time_table/ and, again, two hours is a more realistic journey time. You do, however, need to be a bit careful about the different routes that are available by train and whether all tickets are valid by all routes. |

I often drive from West Surrey to both Bath and Winchester. Keeping to all speed limits, etc., from my home to Bath is 90 minutes, from my home to Winchester is 45 minutes at most. Thus, if one drove from Bath, then far to the east to my home, and then returned south west to Winchester, it would THEN take 2 hours 15 minutes. Driving direct has to be far, far quicker! I'd guess at 90 minutes max. Surreyman |

Not necessarily, there's a good chance I'd go the M25 route in busy summer holiday time, so you're probably not that far off the route really. but certainly if it wasn't peak time down to the 303 then to winchester would be a pretty confident 90 minutes. That's knowing the route though, if you're going to allow some time for getting lost and not finding places to park etc. then 2 hours is perhaps reasonable for a tourist. Jim. |
