I searched for a while in the FAQ but couldn't find out whether air
tickets can be purchased one year in advance (with the goal of cheaper
prices, of course)
We are planning a trip from Seattle to Madrid on Summer 06 and would
like to get a nice price.
Thanks!

12 months is perfectly normal for full service airlines.
For low cost airlines it's quite common not to be able to
buy tickets for the next 'season' until a few weeks before
that season starts.

TBH, I doubt that the price will vary much between now
and about Feb. The airlines price the peak season appropriately
immediately the tickets go on sale.

I bought a tkt for thailand from Lufthansa almost one year in advance
the advantage was
low price for high season
no fuel surcharge

I once booked about London to Dallas 18 months in advance, well before the
airline (Brannif) went broke. Eventually American Airlines took over the
route and honoured the Brannif tickets.

actually 330 in advance days is the traditional limit for advance sales
on the majors. This figure comes from their historic programming and
even booking practices predating the computer era.

330 days is the standard with almost all airlines

Only problem with buying that far in advance is that the
airline schedules may change in the interim. I had that
experience when I booked a month-long trip for December,
2000-January, 2001. Originally I was scheduled from Los
Angeles to Vienna/Brussels/London/Paris and return.
American Airlines cancelled its direct flight from Paris
effective January first of 2001, so I was informed I did not
have a direct return flight from Pari to LAX, after all!
(They gave me plenty of advance notice, and I managed to
arrange to change at LHR instead of Dallas, as they
initially wanted to schedule me, but it was still a nasty
surprise.

You can buy a year in advance but I'd advise waiting until
January or Febuary when the consolidators get
their allocation and fix their prices

This happened to me with the clunker that suddenly it required an overnite
in London at my expense. After several months of email and snail mail to
various offices and the president of the airline ( BA) as well, they paid
our hotel and dinner. But it was still a hasssle we had not planned on.

I don't know about a full year, but I plan so far ahead on solo trips
that I buy my tickets many months ahead. I already have my tickets for
next April, for instance.
