I don't see why they'd want a tip for just pointing.

I don't either, but they do, same with those 'tip'
jars in coffee shops.

Tipping in France
from WorldWeb Travel Guide
In restaurants and cafés, a service charge of 15% is included in prices by law
("service compris" should be written on the menu). Tipping in not necessary
unless you are very satisfied with the service.
People usually tip taxis drivers (10-15%), porters, concierges, hairdressers
(10%) and ushers. It is common practice to tip coach driver and tour guides
after an excursion.

Which I choose to ignore! The only tipping I've ever done in Europe
(aside from leaving something for the hotel chambermaid, when I check
out), has been small change for the lavatory attendant at the opera
(when there is one - they are not always there).

I guess I'd disappoint them, then. In any case, I can find my seat
myself.

What law requires that service charges be included? It's just a custom.

Didn't know that. So does my daughter, so we have a French
grand daughter, can't ask her much because she is in the
babbling stage.

Mxmanic gives good advice, but is not usually a reliable authority on
anything dealing with culture. See his comments in the past on food and
dress. If he says how to get rom x to y I go for it, but when it comes to
food nad drss, I'll check with Earl
