I found out the hard way last year that various European ATMs and
merchant terminals required PINs of varying length. Some wanted the 4
digits commonly used in Canada, and some wanted 6. (This applies to
France and Switzerland only. Other circumstances may apply elsewhere.)

The problem with the ATMs was that after 2 or 3 unsuccessful attempts,
they would spit your card out and not allow its use afterwards. The
problem with the merchant terminals was that others in the lineup would
become noisily impatient, and I ended up using a credit card just to
avoid any further delays.

For my trip this summer, I will obtain full instructions, in writing,
from a senior executive at my Credit Union before I go!
