Default Hotels, First night rate confusion

I'm trying to book a hotel online, specifically the Thistle Thistle Marble
Arch in London, but this seems to happen with most hotels I try

I want to book 4 nights at the end of the month: Fri, Sat, Sun, Mon. For a
standard double room I'm quoted £130/night. Total = £520

However, if I only choose 3 nights: Sat, Sun, Mon. For a Standard double
room I'm quoted £100/night. Total = £300. When you compare to the above it
does seem rather silly??

So really, in order to get the best deal I have to book Friday alone for
£130 for the 1 night, then book the other 3 days seperate??

Seems like a situation where a phone call is appropriate.

It's usually better to book through a third party.Thistle never offer
as good a deal as third party agents do.

We stayed at the Tower Thistle Hotel once, using a Dutch package that
included breakfast, the ferry, transport to and from the hotel and a
book of vouchers. It was half the best rate the hotel would give us on
the phone, excluding breakfast. We met some people who had booked
through a UK agency and were paying substantially less than us.

There were less than a dozen on the ferry, including us and a pop
group paid to entertain the passengers. The company stopped running
ferries on that route a few weeks later.

Are you calculating (assuming) that 520/4 = 130? Given the 3 night rate
could it be 3 nights @100 and one @ 220 (or some other mathematical
combination). I've seen that happen in the US particularly over weekends
where on one occasion it was something along the lines of 99/79/69/129 for
Fri/Sat/Sun/Mon

via londontown.com it's definately per room per night

I notice a great many hotels seem to offer special rates on
weekends, but those I've been searching for Brussels next
June seem to factor in the weekend rates for that portion,
when quoting the total cost of my stay.

That's probably true - however, I'm paranoid enough to want
to deal directly with the hotel. (I've read a few horror
stories about people booking through a "discount" site, only
to find, when they arrived, that the hotel had never heard
of them!)

Only once, in all my years of travelling have I ever booked in
advance and found, when I arrived, that the hotel had never heard
of me. That was a small hotel in Cremona, and in that case I
*had* dealt directly with them. I even showed them the E-mail
message they had sent me confirming my reservation, but they
still maintained that they had never heard of me. I didn't
believe them, but it didn't do me any good.

They didn't want a deposit or a credit card number when I made
the reservation, and I think what happened was that they rented
the room to someone who arrived earlier than I did, but without a
reservation, fearing that I might not show up, and thinking that
a bird in the hand was worth two in the bush.

I also found that hotels that are near to certain
"theatre" areas (for example ) can have a rate
for all nights and on Friday night the rate goes
up for that night only.
Others have Saturady night where it occurs
Others go down on weekends.
If you can work out the full reason you are well
on the way to being an expert.

Hotels in metropolitan areas often charge higher prices for weeknights
because those are the nighs used by business travelers. Once the
business travelers go home, the hotel offers lower prices for the
weekend to entice the "leasure" traveler to fill up their empty rooms.
