Am returning to the States via London's Gatwick airport. Having a
10:30 flight on Continental, rather than fight the train with luggage
or traffic in a taxi, I want to stay at or near the airport. Any
suggestions as to where? It needs to be near the Gatwick Express Train
line as I plan to train to and from London for dinner and a show.

The Hilton is at the South Termianl where the train station is.
The Le Meridian is a the North terminal and there is an easy shuttle train
to the South terminal.
Both the above tend to be expensive - but I have heard of people who claim
they found a good rate (but will bever say where).
Most others will require a shuttle bus ride to get to and from the airport
and train station - which sort of negates your requirements a bit.
there is a low-cost hotel I think its a www.travelodge.co.uk near the North
terminal sort of walking distance (but no pavement) might be Ok if you have
no luggage or kids.
Many airlines will allow you to check in your luggage the night before.

Here's a compromise to save bucks--it does mean fighting the train with
luggage, but it won't be that much more trouble than fighting a shuttle with
luggage: Jury's has a hotel a modern, comfortable hotel near the East
Croydon rail station, which is halfway between Victoria Station and Gatwick
on the rail line (20 minutes to each)--their online rate when I booked was
55 Pounds (single or double occupancy): http://www.jurysdoyle.com/croydon/
Other than that, staying directly in Victoria at the Thistle Victoria is
another very convenient option (walk off the train, walk into the hotel
without leaving the station), and you can sometimes get singles there for as
little as 50 Pounds: http://www.thistlehotels.com/thistle/hotels/
If you are willing to take a shuttle (possibly) to a Gatwick airport,
Priceline often has good Gatwick rates, which you can get a sense of here:
