My family (me, wife, 2 boys 16 & 18) will be going to Ireland this summer
for 2 weeks, from the 4th to the 18th of July. All I have done is buy the
tickets to Shannon. We want to wing it from there. Low key, we'll rent a
car and travel around, try to do a lot of day hikes.
We would appreciate any and all tips anybody might have for things to see
and places to go. Thought we would try and stay at B&B's. What would be a
good way to rent a car?

A good way to rent a car? Same as anywhere else. Arrange to pick up your car
at Shannon, and definitely reserve it in advance at the height of summer!
You will probably be able to find places to stay, but it would help if you
could know one or two days in advance where you're going to be so you could
book ahead.
There's lots of great hiking pretty much anywhere that there's rough
terrain. The Connemara is great, as is the SW of the country, and there's
some beautiful hiking near Antrim in the N, to name but a few.
Winging it is a really good way to see the country, as you never know what
you're going to stumble across and suddenly change your plans.
One question though...uh, what's the Palm Pilot for...?

Hi. we recently returned from a trip to Cork in southern Ireland. We had an
amazing time and I'm excited for you to be heading to Ireland!
We rented a car and definitely felt that it was worth it...we booked online
before going and hunted round for the cheapest deal from our airport...for
us it turned out to be national car rental. In terms of walking we stayed
in the south west and walked around some of the peninsulas...sheep's head,
Beara etc. I HIGHLY recommend purchasing a copy of "Lonely Planet Walking
in Ireland". It is an excellent book with walks throughout northern and
southern Ireland. there is a table at the front which lists the walks by
region and also says how long they are and how difficult they are (rated
from easy through to hard). the selection is excellent with many circular
day trails and some longer hikes up to a 2 weeks. for each hike they
recommend places to stay/eat to meet different budget requirements and all
walks can be done without camping.
Hope this helps!
Kind regards
Jo
