Thanks for the advice! Is it easily accessible by train? How far is it from
the nearest train station?
Thanks for your help!

You go to the station in Prien, then very close to the station, there is
a small train that takes you to the lake. You hop on a small boat that
will take you to the island to visit the castle.

It will cost you a few fee in euros for the train and the boat to go
from the train station to the castle.

The sun always shines on Chiemsee, even when I visited it once at the
end of November.

The Autumn often has wonderful weather round the Alps. It's the best time
to go hiking or walking, as the views can be superb.

I agree, spring is very nice too. Did anybody mention the Sound of
Music land yet? :-)

I think I am the only person who ever visited Salzburg in the mid
sixties without having seen the film first. I remember that the
tourist office was plastered with posters from the film, over printed
with "Visit The Sound of Music Land". I didn't manage to force myself
to watch the film until last year, when I concentrated mainly on the
scenery :-)

It's ironic (and lucky for me, actually) that the Austrians themselves have
never heard of TSOM, a few have heard of the von Trapp story but only very
few. Except perhaps those in the tourist industry in Salzburg.

I hate to say it, but it's a pretty good film, for that type of kitsch. The
songs are generally excellent (if not my taste). And the scenery is nice
too. Pathetic though it sounds, Austria really *does* look like that,
especially in the late Summer and Autumn.

Ah, but I remember a porcelain flower chandelier (Meissen?) that made the
Bohemian cut-glass ones look hulking.
