Default Herrenchiemsee

Can anybody tell me about Herrenchiemsee, and if is reasonable
to do as a day-trip from Munich? We would like to use the
Bayern-ticket (there are 5 of us) if possible.

Is there enough to see to make it worth the trip?

Thanks!!

Yes ,why not ? Sounds like a pleasant excursion to visit one of King
Ludwig's castles.
It's little more than one hour by train to Prien.
Then connecting narrow gauge (AFAIK Bayernticket isn't valid) and boat
http://www.chiemsee-schifffahrt.de/main.php
over to Herreninsel.

If that's boring you can always continue by train one hour and have some
time at Salzburg.
Bayernticket is valid Mo-Fr from 9:00, in the weekend Sa and Su it's
replaced with the Scönes Wochenendeticket (Happy weekend)

Absolutely. It's the biggest one of the mad king's castles, surrounded
by a huge park with sculptures and founatins. Make a round trip to the
other island Frauenchiemsee with the old monastery, include some pit
stops in beer gardens, and the day is full.

Yes (see
http://www.schloesser.bayern.de/engl...s/herrench.htm).
Take the the little 1887 train
(http://www.fes-muenchen.de/rund/herbst.01/chiemsee.jpg) from the
station to the harbour in Prien. It's maybe slower than walking but
it's fun.

Take a round trip ticket that covers the train and the boat to
Herrenchiemsee and Frauenchiemsee (Bavaria's smallest municipality) as
well (EUR 8,70 each). Visit the monestary
(http://www.schloesser.bayern.de/engl...e/fr_chiem.htm)
if you like, have a rest under the trees of the beergarden of the Linde
inn or simply have a walk around the island.

I have to do this trip at least twice a year and I always enjoy it.

Well, since we're going in the middle of October, it might be too cool
for the beer gardens- unless we have good luck and warm weather!
Thanks for the info!

Jens, thanks so much for the links. It's definitely on our "must do" list
now!

That's not correct anymore. Bayernticket is now valid on Sat/Sun,
without the 9:00 restriction (i.e. starting at midnight).

You can. However, it's not valid on local buses at Salzburg.

Fraueninsel is also worth a visit. General Jodl, hanged at Nurenburg,
is buried in the church yard.

It's a half scale Palais de Versailles.

I spent half a day at the Frauinsel and the Herrenchiemsee and I didn't
regret it. If you take a full day to visit the island and the castle,
you will probably enjoy it.
