Does anyone know of a directory site that just has links to hotels
around the world?
I am getting so fed up of these "middle man" websites that try and
sell you rooms. I just want to go directly to the hotels own sites,
get the phone number of the hotel and call them myself to make the
reservation.
Help!

You can find links to a great many hotel chains at
http://www.hotelstravel.com/chains.html . Both large and small groups are
represented. One large group not on the list is Accor - www.accor.com .
Another is the UK group Travel Inn - www.travelinn.co.uk . You should be
able to easily find the telephone number of any individual hotel from one of
these groups.
For smaller hotels, or those not affiliated with a group or chain, just
Google the hotel name and city. If the hotel has its own website, it should
be there in the first few results.

Your frustation is understandable, but I have had some very good luck with
some of these middleman sites in the past when booking hotels in London and
in the US. In fact, the first time I made a reservation this way I followed
up by contacting the hotel directly to double check my reservation. I was
told by them straight up that there's no way they themselves could offer the
rates for their own hotel that the broker was offering, and that the
reservation was the real deal.
That said, it's less easy, when dealing with a broker, to get info on the
specific room.

Check www.vrbo.com
It's not for hotels, but for private apartments directly let to travelers by
the owners for short terms. nicer places, better deals.
[I'm listed there...]
