Default Heathrow layover side trip

On April 24th, I will be arriving at Heathrow airport, and will have an eight
hour layover. Any suggestions for a side trip either by the tube or bus to an
area where I can find interesting restaurants,or some shopping?

Picadilly Circus and Leicester Square are a stop apart on the
Picadilly Underground line direct from Heathrow. YOu should find
something in those areas. And one stop beyond Leicester Square is
Covent Garden; you might like to browse the market there.

Keep in mind that the Tube makes a lot of stops. There is a route planner
on www.thetube.com that will give you an estimate of time. Something like
Picadilly Circus will burn at least an hour in each direction. That still
leaves you with a few hours in the area, but its an awful lot of time
sitting in a subway.

Windsor is only about 10 miles from Heathrow; there are restaurants and
shops outside the castle. Since its that close, a taxi will get you there
quickly (though I'm not sure how to secure a taxi for the return trip).

Yep - Windsor would make for a much more relaxed visit.
Re taxis for Heathrow - stop one in the street! Or go to any minicab centre.

If you like Indian food, Southall might be interesting. There may be a
direct bus from Heathrow, but you can certainly get there by taking the 140
to Hayes & Harlington station and then getting the train to Southall (one
stop).

Wasted my time writing you a detailed answer, which was returned as
undeliverable. If you (or anyone else) want it, please ask by e-mail.

If you get a black cab from Heathrow they'll charge a fortune to get to Windsor,
probably at least £35. It's outside the Greater London border so they can charge
what they like. Either get a private hire cab from the Slough/Windsor area to
come pick you up (the info points should be able to get you a number) or get a
black cab (or 223 bus I think) to West Drayton train station and get the train.

Why don't you post it here? Some other people than just the original poster
may be interested in your answer.

Larry, I really don't understand this. Shouldn't everyone be able to benefit
from your wisdom and experience? All I can imagine with the insistence on
direct email is that you are sending people some sort of sales pitch.

As the o.p didn't ask for a personal e-mail I can't see any reason for your
complaints.
This is a discussion group and a question is likely to be answered here.
Unless your answers are wonders of exactly correctness there's always the
possibillity of an error to be corrected from someone else.
So unless you've something to hide I can't see any reason to not post the
answer here in the n.g ?

The bus serving West Drayton from Heathrow Airport is the U3 (destination
Uxbridge). Alternatively the 140 (destination Harrow) passes Hayes &
Harlington station, which is one stop further from Slough but is served by
some slightly faster trains which don't stop at West Drayton. At Slough, the
OP would need to change to the branch line for Windsor.

This bit is correct.

But this is not. Just bcause the journey is "outside the area" does not
mean that the fare is unregulated, it is, it's just different (more
expensive
to reflect the fact that the cab cannot make a return pick-up).

So surely a reasonable amount would be double the fare for the part of the
journey outside the GL border? They charge much more this. I landed at Heathrow
wanting to travel to Iver, about one mile outside the GL border and about five
miles from Heathrow. The driver wanted something like £25 IIRC (it was about 10
years ago). He wasn't going budge on this.

As I only had a rucksuck, I told him to take me to the GL border, and I paid him
the metered fare of about £4.50 and walked the mile. He seemed really pissed
off, but serves them right if they're going to charge £20 for going one mile
outside GL.

Hmm, last year I got charged an absurd sum in a metered cab fromTerminal 1
to West Drayton., which is INSIDE the GL boundary. I had paid seven quid for
a local minicab to take me to the airport. The black cab I got for the
return cost me over £12. The driver was clearly pissed off that I'd booked
him for a local trip rather than to central London.

I would second the suggestion of Southall for some interesting Indian
Restaurants. there was a direct bus service (and almost certainly still is).

Also dont forget the Heathrow Express is the fastest way to central London
if you decide to go there.
