About how much would a call cost to England if I don't have any
international long distance deals or anything like that?

One might just guess from the USA purely on the basis that the OP (like
so many) seem to assume that that no one else outside of that particular
country ever reads or posts to newsgroups...

Call your long distance carrier and ask.

From the USA, in most places you can dial 1016868 011 44 + UK number (minus
the leading 0) and it will cost about 8 cents a minute.

http://www.pt-1.com/101-6868_Rates.html

There are much better rates available from other companies (as low as about
3 cents a minute), but this one is completely ad hoc and doesn't require
signing up for anything. For casual infrequent use it works great.

You don't mention where you'd be calling FROM - I should think that
would be a factor, too!

Natasha:

I'm guesing from your mail headers that you're in California, but it would
help to specify. In the US, call costs can vary wildly depending on who
your long-distance operator is. If you're at college, they may have their
own (expensive) rate plan for international calls. You need to:

- find out who provides your telephone service for international (this may
not be the same as your local provider)
- check their website or get their 800# customer service number
- ask them!

If this isn't simple, then the best thing to do is to buy a prepaid
international calling card, such as http://www.consumer.att.com/prepaidcard/
(there are many, many different cards out there). I use IDT's prepaid
global card. See https://app1.idt.net/debit/globalcall/signup/signup.asp to
sign up - you just need a credit card. Your call will then cost 10 cents a
minute from the US to the UK, through a toll-free access number.

Does that work for all other countries too? (Substituting the country code
for the 44, of course.)

Yes, but the rates for other countries are higher (about 10-15 cents for
most of western Europe, Australia, and Japan, and up from there).

Please tell me more about the 3-cent ones.

I use 1016868 exclusively to Asian countries and Canada. Be advised that
it's network can be busy at times (e.g. Chinese new year to China), and the
quality of it's lines is sometimes not too good.

Sorry everyone. I live in New Mexico. I guess it would have helped to say that.
