Default Greek passport hell !!!

The Greek State, in its glory, has decided that all existing passports
are invalid, and must be replaced with new ones which include your
inside leg measurement, relationship to Al Qaeda, etc.

Mrs B is going to Greece on Saturday. She called the Consulate here in
NL and was told that she could have an appointment for a new passport
in October. However apparently she can use her existing passport to
GO to Greece, but not to leave. She can use her ID card to travel in
Schengen countries, except she can't, because she lost it ages ago
and didn't bother to replace it. It takes, with a fair wind, 3 days
to get a new ID card, after which she can leave Greece and also apply
for a passport at the office in Greece. In principle.

Apparently as everyone is doing the same, it takes ages. According to
the papers there are practically riots at the passport offices, and
in Germany, where there are a lot of expat Greeks there are people
camping outside the Embassy.

Fun !!

Are the Greeks conspiring with your gemeente to make life hell for you?

Do the Greek immigration officers scan your passport and display the annotated
result on a display with what looks like US origin software? I saw something
like this in Turkey last year.

Time to get a Dutch ID card with a photo of Batman on it.
One was used by someone to visit UK last week.

I imagine that's the general idea - the Septics have always been a bit
paranoid about Greece. When there ws a hijacking at Athens ages ago it
resulted in all sorts of dire warnings from Uncle Sam - regardless of
the fact that the most dangerous place for hijackings is the dear old
US of A. As a happy by-product it reduced the Bermuda shorts and white
trainers brigade almost to zero for a couple of years.
