Default Greek Museums

I have heard that all of the formal museums of Greece are closed for
renovations/remodeling. Since I plan to be there in June 2003, I am a
little disappointed but I can live with the closed museums, even
though I plan to visit all the major cities on the classical tour. Any
information will be appreciated. You may also post to me in private if
you prefer. Thanks!

According a statement made by the Greek Ministry of Culture and
Civilization, almost one year ago, the following museums will be closed:
1) National Archaeological Museum: From the end of October 2002 to the
end of 2003
2) Archaeological Museum of Delfi - 5 halls, from 08/05/2002 to April
2003.
3) Archaeological Museum of Olympia, from September 2002 all halls will
be closed
For more accurate information, please visit the site http://www.culture.gr
and contact the Museums you plan to visit.

The Benaki (?sp) Museum, which is outstanding, was closed for several
years for renovation, etc.; so I am sure it is open.

I think only the big archeological museum in Athens is closed.

Elsewhere in Greece, I can recommend Olympia, Mycennae, Corinth, and
especially Delphi. Delphi's museum is great. Olympia's and Corinth's
were okay, too, and there was none at Mycennae (it's stuff is in
Athens, 'natch).

On my recent trip I made it to Crete and Santorini. If you can manage
it, try to get to those places. There is a nice museum in Santorini
with all the stuff they found in Akrotiri, and the museum in Iraklion,
Crete, has all the best stuff from all over Crete. It's great - and
includes the Phaestos Disk.

There is a museum at the Parthenon. Most of the objects are in other
museums, anyway. Such as New York and London. Its a little
disconcerting to have them say its a replica.

I am quite sure the outstanding Benaki Museum is open.

It was closed for several years for renovation, etc.; so it should be
outstanding now.

The mycenae museum is next to the Lion Tomb, which has been fenced off
and shares an entrance with the museum. The museum is due to open "in
the spring". This is what I was told while visiting the site in every
year between 1999 and 2002. Go figure. I have hot been since the
autumn of 2002.

There has been quite some work on tidying and clearing the "other"
tholos tombs, ie the ones people never see because they are away from
the citadel and off the beaten track, and they have restored the tomb
of Aegistheus (about time, but shame about the relieving triangle).

The muesum will hopefully house stuff from the basements of the
Nafplion Museum (Grave circle B, etc.). I hope they put the skeltal
remains from the Grave Circles in there (the ones used in the food and
drink exhibition a few years ago).

From what I hear, the Olympia museum will be all closed apart from the
pediment/metope room and the hermes (although this too will be
unavailable for a while). It is worth going just for the pediments,
although seeing Miltiades' helmet and Pheidias' cup is always a joy.

Delphi I have not visited for over five years and Corinth for more
than ten, although corinth never excited me as a museum.

May I recommend the Pylos museum, too, for the Bronze Age enthusiasts.

Cheers,
Stelios Zacharias

I didn't visit the museum at Nafplio. I was so charmed by the city that I forgot it - and
the kastro !

I really have to go back there. :-)

I recall reading that the museums in Delphi and Olympia (another poster
mentioned a partial closing though) would be closed for a *few* months
this year.
