Default Greece: Paros or Naxos?

Hi,

Thanks for everyone's response in fine-tuning our Greek Island plans!

Is it better to use Paros as a base or Naxos? We want to take
day-trips to Myconos, Delos. We have about 2 weeks in Greece & have
cut out Crete & Rhodes from our itinaray:

Option 1:
Athens (2 nights)
Paros (5 nights) - use as a base to go to Naxos, Delos & Myconos
Santorini(4 nights)
Athens (1 night)

Option 2:
Athens (2 nights)
Naxos (5 nights) - use as a base to go to Paros, Delos & Myconos
Santorini(4 nights)
Athens (1 night)

Can anyone recommend any clean affordable hotels (40-50Euro for 2
people)

Thanks!

Having just returned from the Greek isles, I would recommend you split up
your time on Paros. I'd first go to Mykonos, enjoy a day at Elia beach, and
a day on Delos. Spend 3 nights here. Then you shoud go to Paros or Naxos for
2 nights. There isn't much to do on Paros. It's pretty to see the town of
Naoussa and have dinner here, visit the beach at Kol... or Naxos, see the
"door", visit the long Plaka beach area which is very nice, and probably the
best place to stay for your price, drive the island if you want, but that'll
take much of a day. Neither island is worth a long stay unless you want to
spend alot of time at the beach.

Santorini is worth 4 nights. There is much to see and enjoy here.

Hi,

This sounds much more sensible. There isn't much to choose really between
Paros and Naxos. They are both nice islands. You would probably do Mykonos
and Delos as a day trip on a tour boat which can probably be done from
either. If you were using normal ferries/hydrofoils the connections between
Paros and Mykonos are better than between Naxos and Mykonos.

What I would do, though, is stay for 2 or 3 nights on each. In fact,
Santorini to Piraeus (Athens) at the end is going to be a really long haul,
unless you are planning to do it overnight. Why not go Athens, Naxos,
Santorini, Paros or Athens, Paros, Santorini, Naxos.

I would choose Naxos, if you want to stay in the main town (where most of
the boats go from). Parika (?) the main town on Paros is quite built up and
the chances are that the chap serving you in the taverna may have a
Birmingham accent while Naxos is a little less spoilt! If you want to sty
away from Chora either will do well.

I'll add my voice to Naxos - delightful studio apartments near the beach for
25 Euros, easy to walk around, busses to other parts of the island, very
unspoiled. Three days enough to get the flavor. Santorini, probably the
same.

BUT BE WARNED - Ferries go only to Mykonos a couple of times a week, not
"daily" as you may see advertised. For instance, when I was there in early
June, ferries went only on Tuesdays and Thursdays - I'd arrived on Thursday
and planned to leave on Monday, so I had to forget Mykonos. I would guess
the same applies from Paros? If I'd realized this I could have turned my
stays around.

I stayed in Paros in June, in Naoussa, there are one day excursions to
Mylonos and Delos from there, you are correct ,ferry connections are a bit
awkward sometimes and if the meltemi wind blows, can stop altogether, we
stay in Naoussa every year for a week or so combined with other islands,
don't go to Paros without seeing Naoussa and take lots of film. you will
love it.

Naxos has a delightful beach and town plus it is big enough to drive

have also never been on a vacation where I saw as many people with an
arm in a cast. Must have something to do with the motorscooters.

Anti-Paros has a nice little town and some nude sunbathing. Paros has
already been commented on.

Just be sure that the wind gods don't spring a dreaded Meltemi on you. These
are very strong summer winds that really kick up high seas. I forget what
month you will travel.

I was on a very small substitute ferry from Naxos to Mykonos during a
Meltemi. The 130-foot (40-meter) boat did many belly-whoppers off waves.
Most frightening boat trip I've ever had. I tripped and broke a wrist - but
that was before we left the protected harbor - plain carelessness.

Strikes disrupt the ferries even worse - is one likely?

They both work as a base for boat trips to other islands. I'd recommend
Naxos over Paros because the first is not a tourist hot spot.

Much better.

Hmm. That surprises me. Naxos is a main island and it not only has several
ferries per day to Piraeus, but also to all neighbouring islands (Paros,
Naxos, Ios, Santorini). Should not be a problem at all. Anyway:

There are organised Delos/Mykonos boat tours from Naxos.

Meltemia can be challenging. I recall an experience in late July with a
large automobile carrying ferry that was trying to make it into the port of
Allonisos. Every attempt he made to clear the mooring it seemed as if he
would be heading straight on to the rocks. I think it took more than an hour
and a dozen really seasick people to make it through.

Are the ferries fast between Naxos and Delos? We just took the tour from
Mykonos to Delos and it took over 1 hour to reach Delos. On the return we
had very rough seas, quite a wild ride, and that was only to Mykonos. I
can't imagine doing the trip all the way back to Naxos. Seems unwise.

There are no ferries to Delos from anywhere, _only_ organised tours.
I should think the ride is about 2 hrs from Naxos each way, give or take.

Seems long to me, it's closeby.

Why? I've done longish day trips on small boats several times in the
Aegean, including Naxos - Delos, no problem. Most of the time the sea is
completely smooth anyway. Once or twice we had a bumpy ride in windy
weather. Half of the people on the boat were seasick, the other half were
enjoying the rollercoaster ride. I was among the latter . But it's just a
matter of habit. Seasickness is uncomfortable, but not harmful. If it's too
dangerous, the Boats don't go anyway.

We took the small boat from Ornos on Mykonos, to Delos. It was not an
organized tour. Just bought the tickets on the beach, and the boat took us
to Delos and told us what time we needed to be back. We were on our own on
Delos. It took l hr and 15 minutes to reach Delos. Yes, I was suprised at
the length of time, but that's what it took.
