From looking at http://www.gvb.at/, it seems that tram #1 is the best
tram to arrive at the Hauptbahnhof, travel to Schloss Eggenberg, and
then travel to the Hauptplatz to see the city center. But that website
has a blank line for the Hauptbahnhof for tram line #1. Does the tram
#1 not stop at the Hauptbahnhof, and I will need to walk south from
the Hauptbahnhof to the next major street to catch the tram? Or am I
misreading the website?

Either you take #3 or #6 right at the Hauptbahnhof exit and go oly one
station (that is about 200 meters) or you walk these 200 meters just
across there. If you decide to walk the tram station to go to
Eggenberg is at the sout-eastern corner of the Europaplatz which is
situated just in front of the Hauptbahnhof.
There you can take either #1 or #7.
If you decide to take #1 you have to get off the tram at the station
called "Schloss Eggenberg" and walk about 200 meters to the entrance.
If you decide to take #7 you have to get off the tram at the station
called "Franz-Steiner-Gasse". Then you have to walk about 500 m to the
entrance.

Thanks a lot for the detailed response. Now when I arrive

It is made very clear in the site
you have referred to. The Number 1 does not stop at the
hbf, but a 7 minute walk away at
Eggenberger Gurtel. Alternatively,
you could tranfer to the #3 or #6 which run from the Eggenberger Gurtel to
the hbf in a 2-3 minute ride.
