Default Granada as a daytrip from Seville: worth it?

I notice that the Alhambra in Granada is highly recommended. I am considering
making it a daytrip from Seville, but my guidebook says that trains take 3
hours to go from Seville to Granada. Is it really worth sitting on a train
for 6 hours to see the Alhambra?

If you like that sort of thing - yes definately - it is a wonder to behold.

But if you don't like unusual buildings then forget it.

Why not google for some pictures and decide from those.

None in Spain would do that. But I know a buch of non-American people that
have gone to Washington DC from New York by train for a daytrip.

I mean that the Alhambra *is* really worth a visit, but I have to agree that
visiting it from Seville will make a hard day. It depends on the available
time you have, and the easiness of an eventual next visit to Spain of yours.
If you can go one day and return the day after, I'd recommend it without any
doubt, or if your travel plans include a visit to Spain in the coming
months, I'd leave it for the next trip.

But if it is none of the above, and you can take the train that leaves
Seville at 7am, and return on the one that leaves Granada at 5:40pm, it
allows you 7:30 hours in Granada during which you can visit the Alhambra if
you have previously booked the tickets.

Train times are actual ones. More info at

Its a wonderful complex of buildings, but you wont appreciate it
combined with that rail journey. Granada deserves a couple of days in
your itinary.

Although the Alhambra is great, the found Granada to be boring otherwise.
Besides, that 4-hour train ride would really make it a very long day trip.
As an alternative, you could do a day trip to Cordoba, because if you take
the AVE high speed train, it would take about an hour to get there. The
Mesquita in Cordoba is obviously not as dramatic as the Alhambra, but in
general, I think Cordoba has a lot more character than Granada.

I agree about Cordoba being better all round.

As someone who suggested previously that you visit Granada, I share your
doubts about this plan.

A really good visit--not the only way, but a good way, in my opinion--would
be something like this.

Arrive in Granada and settle someplace in the old town near the Alhambra.

Poke around the Albacin district in the afternoon and perhaps have an early
dinner there.

When it gets dark, take a cab to the Alhambra and see it for the first time
at night.

Return to the Alhambra the next day. Then go to your next destination or
(better) spend the night and leave first thing in the morning.

If your next destination is Sevilla, I think a bus would be as good as or
better than the train.

I think also that Granada would make a pleasant and refreshing stop between
Barcelona and Sevilla. Perhaps there is a night train Barcelona-Granada.

I don't pretend to know what you should sacrifice from your whole itinerary
to make possible at least one night there, but I really think you would not
regret making room for it. (Or perhaps I should be honest and just say that
I can't imagine feeling regret at doing so.)

As I recall, the Alhambra is open most, but not every, night. The night tour
does not include the entire complex, but is really wonderful.

Have a great trip!

Even in late September the lines at the ticket booths were hundreds of
people long in the morning. The booths have a limited number of tickets for
each day. This was for timed __daytime__ visits. Tour operators have
prebought tickets.

The Topkapi Palace in Istanbul puts the Alhambra to shame. Do your very
best to get to Istanbul some day instead of Granada ;-))

It looks like there is a night train from Barcelona to Granada.

Does anyone know if the Granada train station has luggage lockers, so I can
store my backpack while seeing the Alhambra?

Also, about how many hours does seeing the Alhambra take?

According to another poster, lines are extremely long, so it looks like I'd
have to order tickets in advance somehow (and then hopefully I will be able to
bypass the long lines?) Another poster posted a web site where you can order
tickets, but that doesn't come up for me. Anyone know how I can order advance
tickets, and where I would have to pick them up? Thanks!

It's a close one......! To tell you the truth, I just went to the Alhambra
thinking it was going to be just another touristy thing that would keep my
interest for an hour or so. But it was definitely worth going to - spent
most of a day there (and its gardens) in the end. And despite the horror
stories about getting tickets etc, I just walked into a city centre bank,
and just bought one. No queue, nothing - this was in June.

Whether it's quite worth 6 hours on the train I don't know. You could be so
knackered by the time you get there (and back) that it won't be enjoyable.
IIRC, the bus could take less than that, but either way, it's not the most
scenic journey ever..!

hwyl!

Maybe it was a temporary failure, because today it does exist.

Anyway, try this alias: http://w3.grupobbva.com/ALHAMBRA/alhambra/home.html

Seeing comments such as this sadden me for today's tourists but make
me feel extremely fortunate that I spent the time I Europe, 70 days of
which were in Spain, when I did. When I visited the Alhambra, I doubt
that there were a hundred people there.

In my report on Paris, I commented that my first visit to Notre Dame
there were maybe 20 people there whereas my last one there were many
hundreds. The first visit was a leisurly and quiet one without any
external disturbance of any sort. The last visit was considerably
different.

It's nice that so many people are able to travel. It's not nice when
they do it the same time as I. Yeah, I know: Tough!
