Default good book on the Uffizi?

Hi can anyone recommend a good book to take with me to the Uffizi? I am
going to Florence soon, since it's low season it's a good time to spend
some leisurely time at the Uffizi enjoying the artwork, without the
usual crush of tourists. I would like to take a book with me to read
while looking at the paintings, to help me better understand and
interpret them. It needs to be a book that's not overly huge of course.

You may respond with a follow-up here but emailing me at the address
above is best since I may forget to check here.

Grazie mille!

Why not just buy a book at their book store before you go in? As
I recall, they have a good selection, and anything less that you
don't have to pack and take there is a point in your favor.

I knew that silly ;) I have been to Florence before... but I don't want
to choose a book at random, I would like to know what I am getting
beforehand, and that was the point of my post, plus if I buy it here
in the US I can pay in worthless US dollars instead of those expensive
euros, thank you very much President Bush.

How do I know where you've been before? You didn't tell us. As
far as I knew, you didn't even know they have a bookstore.

If you don't like my suggestion, fine--don't take it. But I don't
appreciate being called "silly."

*My* point was that the best way to not buy at random, and to
know what you were getting beforehand, is to look at the book
before you buy it, and you could do that at their bookstore.

Then you will also know that you will be extremely unlikely to see anything
like the choice of books in your local bookshop compared to those available
in the Uffizi. They have a wide range of books covering this very narrow
topic which you won't get anywhere else. Also, the books in your local shop
probably move very slowly and will have been in stock for a number of years
so it is also unlikely that you will have access to anything written
recently.

Hope this helps.

my we have some sensitive egos here...

yes I put in the smiley because I was trying not to be offensive. Even
without the smiley I would have said something other than 'silly' (more
like, "sod off you silly sod" or worse...) if I had meant to be
offensive. OK? Are we feeling better now?

Now... I have indeed been to Florence. Quite a bit. I'm a citizen,
actually, though one who lives abroad and half my Italian side of the
family lives there. However I have not actually been to the Uffizi
itself in several years because between the summer crowds and the
obligations to go visit all sorts of family during the short time I
spend there in the winter, I was not really hip to whether the
bookstore would be up to speed.

I think what I will do is go hit the Edison bookstore in Piazza
Reppublica before going to the Uffizi. I would prefer to have already
chosen a book before I go there. For those who don't know, Edison is
like a super duper Borders and a hip place to hang out and sip an
espresso as well.

I leave one week from today. Woo hoo! Buon natale to all and thanks for
the help.

Uffizi have a bookstore as well, and you can go there before entering
the museum (or even without visiting the museum).

I saw the smiley. With or without it, I don't appreciate it.

There's something about usenet that makes peoples tolerance drop
enormously. Ken, sorry to say this, but you were much too sensitive on
this one.

Merry Christmas.

Default Re: good book on the Uffizi?

I would just like to follow up on my original post.

Not only did I find a perfect (if a bit large) book for my Uffizi
visit, I was stunned at the bookstore.

It's tremendous! Especially if you are a bibliophile, there is a
section just to the right where the art books are, there is a stunning
selection of books on the Uffizi, the Renaissance, Florence, the Duomo,
you name it. I would imagine some of them would be rather hard to find
otherwise.

A family member fell ill so I did not get the chance to return to the
bookstore, make a wish list and purchase a few. However if you find
yourself visiting Florence and would like to see the Uffizi bookstore,
just go to the head of the line and ask the guy or woman there if you
could just go in to visit the bookstore. They will let you in (you have
to pass a metal detector).

Finally, when I made my actual visit, I did make a reservation and I
can tell you it is sooooo worth it. The line forms VERY early in the
morning even during a weekday in low season (winter).

If you go there a day or two before you plan to visit, you can make a
reservation to be admitted at a specific time on a future day. It costs
€3 extra but it is worth it to not have to tire yourself out waiting
in line forever.

I spent most of the day going through the first half of the museum. I
am not really interested in anything they have after the end of the
16th century anyway. A serious artlover could easily take 2 days or
even 3 to visit the whole museum especially if you take time with the
numerous portraits, busts and statues, and ceiling paintings in the
corridors.

Auguri...
