Getting from LHR (London's Heathow Airport) to South Croydon
I would be reaching Heathrow in the morning and need to get to "South
Croydon". What are various options and how much would they cost? I will have the exact postal address. Also only two bags, so I can certainly take trains as far as possible if that makes sense. Unless the taxi fare is too cheap even to consider any other option, I was thinking the best might be a train or bus from the airport to some convenient hub near South Croydon and then a cab from there? I have been to London before, but never to South Croydon. All advice greatly appreciated. |

They are rich and only know limousines. :-) I am trying to research other options and would love to hear from anyone who knows that area. |

Bus X26 runs from LHR to central Croydon - from there you could gat a cab, local bus or get met by your contacts. It won't be quick but is fairly low-hassle. |

This map: http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/pdfdocs/lon_con.pdf shows all the rail (and tram) routes. South Croydon (the station) is in the slim "Zone 5" area in the lower centre; Heathrow halfway up the left hand edge. There's also a journey planner: http://journeyplanner.tfl.gov.uk/user/XSLT_TRIP_REQUEST2?language=en But before we can be certain, perhaps you can pin down the destination a little more precisely. If it's nearest to South Croydon station, then I'd go: Piccadilly line to Hammersmith, change to District line (cross platform), Victoria, then train with a change at East Croydon. -- Roland Perry |

The X26 bus to croydon, 2 quid without an oyster card, will get you close. The alternative is tube to Victoria and then a train to croydon, then a cab from the station, or bus to Feltham, train to croydon via waterloo, likely a little bit faster, and will cost a travel card (so 7 quid) I expect. >Unless the taxi fare is too cheap even to consider any other option, I >was thinking the best might be a train or bus from the airport to some >convenient hub near South Croydon and then a cab from there? The taxi will be 50 quid + and be not much faster than the bus (although you won't have wait for the bus) Jim. |

It can be quite quick, depending on the time, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was faster than the train, given the extremely circuitous rail options. |

They suggesting picking up the bus at Hatton Cross, though. -- Roland Perry |

The destination is some place called Ruffetts Close in South Croydon. I would like a "least hassle" plan that gets me to a place which is close enough and where I can get a cab easily. For example, if it makes sense, I could get a cab from East Croydon itself, rather than train to South Croydon and then cab. Another suggestion elsewhere in the thread is X26 bus to Central Croydon. Theoretically that is appealing for its low hassle factor. But I don't know how frequently the buses run and how long I might have to wait on a cold sidewalk! My plane lands at 7AM, so it will be at least 8AM when I get out. Paying for trains: Is it better to get some kind of day pass instead of paying for each segment? Are national trains on the same fare system as tube? Paying for Bus: Do I need exact change ? Or again can/should I get some pass at the airport? Thank you and everyone for being so helpful. |

When you say leaves from LHR, does that mean from one of the terminals themselves or some public road nearby. I could find out all this at the airport but want to be as prepared as possible. Paying for the bus: Do I need exact change? Can I buy some pass/ticket in the airport itself? I am going to a place called Ruffetts Close in South Croydon. I would like to get to a point where I could either wait comfortably for someone to meet us, or I could take a cab from there. (I do not know the address or the area, so I would not like to find it on my own walking in circles on a cold February morning, something I might well have enjoyed in May)!) |

Certainly simpler, likely to be cheaper, and - at worst - unlikely to be significantly more expensive. > Are national trains on the same fare system as > tube? The same day pass works for the Tube, London buses, and most 'national' (i.e. non-Tube) rail services within London (with a tiny handful of exceptions). It can't be used outside of London.
